shows a big box with “Content not viewable in your region.”
My “region” is the UK: England. Is it just KCIII that has banned imgur content? Or has imgur banned KCIII?
It’s quite common that I see this div, and often I circumvent it.
I’m unsure of the rule boundaries of the SD - based in the USA. I have certain software that would easily allow me into any country (except Russia and China). There’s usually no good reason for it - it’s just like imgur said “only USA”.
In retaliation, I will not be showing any of you the wonderful windmills in Scotland, right near Trump’s cruddy golf courses!
Yes, I missed the sticky as I didn’t think it was “sticky worthy”. That would be like all trump and hegseth “content” was unavailable. We’re almost there.
And the latest news is my Mom’s house is going to closing and somehow I don’t need to travel to the USA. Not unhappy.
Following advice from one of the aforementioned threads, I installed
the free version of Proton VPN. This allows me to appear to be located
in another country and thereby view the images from imgur. It’s easy to
switch on and off if it affects anything else.
That you can use Proton (I think Opera or other browsers have some kind of VPN) makes no sense. It’s not like people are posting Xi as “winnie the pooh” or Kristi Noem shooting dogs.
I use Nord as it allows me to “sail the high seas” yet not from every computer (though I could) and it’s just a trivial annoyance.
Well, that’s annoying. I’ve been using imgur to post pictures to the ‘nature I saw today’ thread for ages, including yesterday. I guess I’ll have to experiment with ImgBB and see if it will work for me, but I don’t have any interest in a paid account or really even registering - just one more password to wrangle for a service I have no use for (well, outside of the SDMB I guess).
ImgBB doesn’t cost anything, and you don’t need to register an account. It also doesn’t work, either.
Here is one I tried to do today:
It just doesn’t seem to be compatible with Discourse. So, I’m sticking with Imgur unless someone comes up with a functioning alternative. I’d rather use one that works for some people than one that doesn’t work at all.
ETA: It eventually showed the image. I think the servers at ImgBB are probably garbage. I’ve also noticed people who post an image from ImgBB will be blank in a thread for a while then eventually appear.
I guess I can try that. My wife has used Shutterfly a lot over the years so I’m very familiar with them. I’m not enthusiastic about having to sign up for an account, but I can give them my spam-collector email address.
They say you need to make a purchase every 18 months, but that’s for unlimited photo uploads, and I doubt I’ll approach any kind of limit. It’s not like I have to upload photos that often. I’ll give it a shot.
That worked. It’s a bigger pain in the rear for sure than Imgur (more steps, have to add to an album, etc.) but it works. I might use this in the future as long as the rest of the world can see them.
Well, Shutterfly didn’t ask for my age when I made my account any more than Imgur did, so we’ll see how long this lasts.
I’m just using it for photos I post here, which is mostly the photo contest threads. I had a 10 year old account I’d forgotten about and the only email I’ve gotten from them was when I reset the password. Seems pretty harmless.
That’s good to hear, and a bit surprising, considering in the middle of the setup process, they flat-out said I was going to be receiving promotional materials from them for signing up on the account creation page. Basically, this is the deal.
And I don’t mind because I probably get thousands of spam messages to this mailbox a day. It’s my throwaway email account used on sites I don’t trust. It even has a fake name attached to it.
FWIW, I’ve been using Imgur for years without any account at all, just posting images anonymously. Since all I ever do is post the occasional single image once in a while, why bother with an account?
The UK law that drove away Imgur seems rather bizarre. Sure, children need to be protected from the dangers of the internet, but I don’t see how this achieves anything.
For me it was needed in order to use the app, which lets me upload directly to Imgur from my phone’s photo album. Otherwise it was impossible to post photos online from my phone. Given that most of the time I’m on the SDMB, I am on my phone, that was handy.
I’ll probably end up getting the Shutterfly app to do the same thing, luckily it has one.
I agree with @Coriolanus that a paid VPN is worthwhile. It can solve many issues pretty easily with blocking like the OP is experiencing.
Of course, there are free VPNs to be had but in my experience they are sluggish and a little iffy but free is free and if you want to view one pic then might be worth the little extra hassle.
VPNs are usually not very expensive though so it may be worth the monthly cost (and most have free trials so you can give them a go without costing anything).
It could be that a VPN is illegal in some countries (like Iraq or Oman) so check your local laws. Some countries only government VPNs are legal so the government can still see what you are doing (IIRC China does this).
