Yes, it’s another thread about difficulties with image posting on the SDMB, but I’ve never before encountered this particular problem. In this thread, several people are unable to see the posted images, while I and several others can see them without difficulty, at least clicking through the link. They’re hosted on ImgBB, which I’ve used without issue whenever I need to show pictures here so far. I don’t have an account, I’ve only used the free functionality; I’ve accessed the pictures from different devices, some of which aren’t connected to any of my profiles, with different browsers, from private tabs and from behind VPN, so I don’t think there’s any caching issue.
So, my questions:
Can you see the pictures in the linked thread?
Can you see them here? (Either in-line preview or clicking through)
Any idea what’s happening? Best guess on my end is that there’s some sort of rate limitation to the free tier, and some people happen to run into that, while others see them just fine.
Any recommendations for a different, free and easy to use image hoster?
I just now saw one weird blue screen [“uploading this content requires registration”], but upon reloading the page it displayed the image, and did so through a couple of dozen reloads.
If you really want to test it, you need to do a bunch of tests with and without cookies, changing up the IP, referrer, agent and other headers, etc. Unless it is something really obvious…
PS I just managed to get the blue screen again! Not sure yet what triggers it
I’m seeing the same failure as others – clicking the blue square with the legend “uploading this content requires registration” simply takes me to a new screen with the same blue square, as does clicking either of the URLs. It’s the same behaviour as in your original thread.
I’ve always had good luck with imgur. Just Google “imgur upload”. It’s free and doesn’t require registration. Just remember, after you upload the image, the URL you have is an “album” URL designed to display an image collection and if you post that it will display a truncated thumbnail. Instead, right-click on the image and selected “display image in new tab” (or equivalent) so that the URL ends with a “.jpg” extension, and post that.
I see one link, one image (midsize PC), then another link.
Clicking the links, picture shows up… eventually. Stalled out for a long time before finally loading.
ETA: in the other thread, again the case photo shows fine in the thread, followed by a link for the second photo in your OP. Using Brave browser on my Pixel phone.
It’s working for me. I see a link, embedded image, then another link. The image displays correctly, and the two links display images when I click on them.
No amount of reloads either of this page or the pic in a separate tab were of any avail for me.
Since I use imgbb religiously for my wargaming pics, this is a bit disheartening, but I’ll try one from my end…
Imgbb has several options for displaying pics (the one above was the first, “viewer links”). Because my wargaming pics are typically very large and detailed with tons of units, I typically use the “BBCode full linked” option, and sometimes the “BBCode thumbnail linked” one. I have never used “HTML full linked” or “HTML thumbnail linked”–which one are you trying to use, H_M_H_W?
I usually just copy out the direct image link and leave that in the post—so far, that seemed to be the easiest way and gave Discourse the fewest hiccups. I wonder if I hit some kind of rate limitation uploading three pics at once? Or maybe usually my posts don’t attract as much traffic?
Anyway, I tried uploading another picture there and got an error twice (‘internal server error’, for what it’s worth), so something seems off—maybe time to look at Imgur, as @wolfpup suggested.
Note that if you switch to Imgur, there is a thread on that in Site Feedback:
I use Imgur exclusively these days if I want to upload an image to share here or elsewhere. I’ve used a bunch of other places to host images in the past, but Imgur has been the least problematic and most reliable one for me these days.
