I’ve been trying all day to send out emails on Thunderbird, but I keep getting an error message that I cannot connect with the server. All of my connections are good on the back of the computer. Obviously no ISP or modem problems or I couldn’t be here asking questions, could I?
Yes, there could be server problems without having a problem accessing t’internet. The email server is probably something like pop.theISPyouuse.com or mail.theISPyouuse.com, which is a completely separate machine and which can cause problems without it affecting your internet access. Go to “Edit-Account Settings-Server Settings” for the POP server, which deals with incoming email, and “Outgoing Server” in the same box for the SMTP server which deals with sending email. And check with your ISP whether they’ve got any problems at present.
No problems here (now or ever) with Thunderbird. I have had the odd time that Firefox hangs up; I don’t know how much commonality (if any) they have. Nothing that a good old reboot wouldn’t cure!
I just got hold of my “IT Guy”, aka my youngest kid, who set up this new computer and this new Thunderbird email for me but forgot that Cox Cable blocks the use of port 25.
He talked me through resetting the outgoing(SMTP) port to 587 and all is now well.
Try that yourself and see if it helps:
Log onto Thunderbird and select “tools”.
From the “tools” menu select “account settings”.
Then select “SMTP”
Check to make sure that “server name” starts with SMTP, not POP. Correct if necessary.
