Anyone else notice the trend that a guy doesn't need to be taller then his girlfriend anymore?

Tom Cruise is the icon of the girl taller then her guy trend, But I have noticed it more often.
Being seen with a girl who is taller then the guy used to make people ridicule both the girl and the guy. But with the image of tall = beautiful supermodels (instead of short actresses) it seems that no longer holds. Women used to lay off the high heels as not to tower over their dates; that is also no longer a consideration.

More examples:
George Clooney
Sophie Dahl
Justin Bieber
Nicole Kidman

Anyone else notices this phenomenon?

I’ve not noticed it as a phenomenon in particular, though I have to defend Bieber a little bit. Put a lady in 3 inch heels, and a short guy like Bieber would have to date an Oompa Loompa, but I believe Snooki is engaged.

Anyway, for your consideration I present Dennis Kucinich.

Ridicule for what? Being awesome? “Hey look at that idiot banging Stacy Keibler!” I don’t think so.

I mean it also helps if that taller woman IS actually Stacy Keibler or Nicole Kidman. Not too many guys want to date Alice the Goon.

So … a woman’s either a tall supermodel or Alice the Goon*, msmith? Tall’s OK as long as you’re gorgeous? :dubious:

  • apologies to our own alice

I think the phenomenon that you are noticing is mostly a case of “rich, famous guy can do whatever he damn well pleases.”

I think the notion that “a guy has to be taller than his woman” is one of those which exist in some Book of Rules that many people only care about until they have a good reason to want to break a rule.

It’s the same book which got quoted to my Grandma on account of “a man must always be older than his woman”; she would point out that, first, she did not belong to her bf, and second, the quoters were just envious (gramps was 9 months younger than her).

As far as I know according to the polls and studies on the subject it appears to be a common attitude. I recall one study showing that even women who said and apparently believed that they didn’t mind shorter men consistently had a lower opinion of shorter men than tall ones.

Well, that’s good to know. I myself only stand 5 " 13" in stocking feet.

I’m 5’8" and my hubby is the same height as me, that doesn’t stop me from wearing gorgeous high heels! I’ve noticed no weird looks or whispering around us, but I tend to not really give a crap about others anyway so I might just not pay enough attention.

I think at first my husband did feel a bit uncomfortable with me being taller but he’s totally fine with it now - heels make me feel prettier so I’m not giving them up no matter what

When my paternal grandmother got married (age 18) she was two inches shorter than her husband. Four years later, she was two inches taller. At least, that’s what I was told.

My brother and sister-in-law are the same height. When they married, (about thirty years ago) she wore ballet slippers so she wouldn’t be taller.
