Why not? The truth hurts?
No, not getting cabin fever. It’s started to warm up in Saskatchewan. We were up to -14 C today. Was quite pleasant being out.
I can’t take it anymore, so my wife and I are going hiking tomorrow. Looks like we’ll get at least near freezing, though the wind chill will probably be much lower, but I can’t stand another day inside. We’ve got warm coats, long underwear, some great little Zippo catalytic warmers, gloves, boots, etc., and it’s time to put them to good use. I hate the winter more and more each year.
Ran yesterday, skied today, running again tomorrow. It should be in the low 20’s tomorrow, that’s actually really good running weather.

Ya get used to it. I was talking to my Wife today though, about how long winter is here. I really don’t mind it. We are ready and prepared. I can take winter from October to May. White, deep blue sky and green, (pine trees). That’s it. But it’s stunning on a crisp morning. You can see forever.
I’ve seen snow every month of the year up here. Bummer is that summers are real short. Winter has it’s own beauty. But I love the summers at alpine elevation. The mountain flowers that seem to come out of nowhere, the streams that run free with snow melt.
The worst part is the sun going down so soon. We lose sunlight at about 4pm. Not bad compared to many folks I know, but I like having sunshine when I get home from work to walk the dogs.
Good on you. So many people forget about our furry friends.
Our dear departed lab had problems in the mountains with cutting up her feet. Even on our gravel drive. She was VERY energetic as a youngster. Bought her little leather booties.
Ahhh, you poor schmucks! Today in Melb, Australia, it’s 25c with a gentle breeze. Perfect for doing some weeding in the garden, getting out and about and generally engaging in NON CABIN stuff.
I wish you all well for enduring the rest of the winter up there! [yuk, yuk, yuk]
Who wants to fly me down under so I can cough on kambuckta?
kambuckta is the poor schmuck: do you realize he has never had a white Christmas?
(although maybe he has never heard of Bing Crosby either)Ha!
I don’t mind the cold so much, but when I am working it’s dark (and seriously cold these days) when I leave for work, and dark when I come home. Luckily I have a very large fenced yard for the dogs - but it’s supposed to warm up to the 20s later today so, walkies for everyone! BTW, Zipper, vaseline or Musher’s Secret really helps for preventing frozen doggie toes.
I do love winter, but draw the line at single or below zero temps (with wind chill at 20 or more below) for walks. When it’s seriously cold and I’m home for the day, I put a ton of bird seed out to the feeders so I can watch all the different birds, burn scented candles, cook elaborate things, read books and enjoy my little warm oasis.
Reply to the OP: Yes! In recent days, my four-year-old has taken to running up and down our house’s little hallway (and dancing to Beatles songs in the living room). Today, finally, it looks like we can do a mid-day walk outside, if we bundle up.
This is why I haven’t walked my dogs in the last few days. My knees and ankles come and go with instability and tend to give out when I least expect it. I don’t need dogs dragging me down the street if/when that happens
Thankfully they’re patient sorts. They ordinarily love being outside in the cold, but lately they’re like, “Can we go back in?” after they go potty out back. I mean, if huskies like them are complaining about the cold…
::: riffles in boxes ::: I’ve got the keys to plane here somewhere. Can someone spot me some gas money?
Oh, kambuckta, you may have warmth now but when you are suffering through a frigid winter, here in Austin it will be a nice warm 100 degrees. Wait…
I usually get cabin fever the worst in February, when it seems like winter will never end. Hasn’t been too bad around here until this week, with several days of single-digit (F) temps. I can deal with teens and above, but when it hovers around 0-10 for many days is when winter gets really old for me.
One February I got such a bad case of cabin fever ( and i wasn’t able to get away anywhere warm that year) I turned up the thermostat, set up a 600 watt halogen utility light for a sun substitute (it gives off radiant warmth as well as light). Put an ocean wave sound effect cd in the stereo, and a reggae cd on a boombox. Closed my eyes, had a couple beers, and…yeah, it wasn’t much like really being on a tropical beach, but it helped a little
What herb is it deriven from?
Same, though I get mine free off the Navy, they are the med only generics. Absolute lifesavers. And copious amounts of homemade chicken soup, french onion soup, peppermint/ginger tea. almost makes getting sick worth it. Oh, and the family traditional congee, a serious comfort food and easy to digest.
I had a husky that absolutely detested coming into the house, winter or summer. Her favorite way to sleep in the winter was curled up in the largest snowbank in the yard she could find. Once the animal control lady came over because a neighbor reported us about never letting the poor doggie into the house. SO we went out, dragged poor Blue in and after bouncing around and getting a doggie treat she blasted back out into the back yard through the doggie door. She could come in any time she wanted [and did to eat and drink nonfrozen water and mooch treats] but she didn’t want in. And in the summer she slept in a hole she dug under the dog house.
I currently have a loaf of bread baking in the wood stove, with a pot of cabbage soup on top. Moisturizes the air, and saves using electricity to cook. We would burn the wood stove anyway. I love the bakers wood stove, it is worlds better from the usual generic wood stove you can only simmer a pot of soup on top of [before switching to the bakers stove.]

The Guaiacumtree. Guaiacum officinale, to be precise (although they may use other Guaiacums in commercial production; G. officinale was the old herbal one). Oddly enough, another resin from the same tree gives us the stuff that turns blue when in the presence of blood and hydrogen peroxide. Handy when you’re not sure if you have blood in your poop. Hence the **guaiac **fecal occult blood test.
The More You Know♒★
ETA: Whenever you see a Latin name for a plant that ends with “Officinale” you know it was used as medicine at some point. It may or may not have been used *effectively *as medicine, but that’s the moniker that was used to label the “official” plant for medicinal purposes.
ZZZZzzzz… :o
I thought I heard my name. I’ve been hibernating.
Oh well, back to sleep: wake me up when nice weather returns and I can go to the beach without freezing my toes off.
Hm, lignum vitae, learn something new every day!
That’s something people who don’t exercise outside in winter maybe don’t realize; exercising outside in winter means that you can peel layers off as you warm up (and you will warm up - a healthy human body generates a serious amount of heat). I’ve had many long walks in really cold weather with my gloves off and my parka opened because I had to blow off some heat. You can’t peel more layers off when you get hot exercising in summer (beyond the limits of modesty, of course).
