Good gods, no. I mean, it’s only January. We still have another three months of winter. I need to pace myself!
It’s in the depths of February I really get cabin fever. Cause like other people have said, you can still walk/go out in the extreme cold. But February here snows and snows and snows and then snows some more for good measure. It’s hard to walk through all of that snow.
I got suckered into going for a walk outside on Sat. I took off my jacket because the body was warm; however, that little circle of exposed flesh not covered by the balaclava was not happy with the 4° wind chills.
I give up the outdoor stuff when it gets to mid 20°s. Too cold to breathe the amount of O2 needed & the exposed skin on the face are my the limiting factors. Luckily, I discovered the underground subway concourse where I work. Almost a 5k loop, probably 20° warmer than outside, no wind (chill), & no snow/ice to slip on.
It was 0 F (-18°C) here on Saturday, so my boys (ages 2 and 4) and I went sledding in the backyard, then had a snowball fight that mostly consisted of me making snowballs for them to throw at me.
Sunday was 20F (-7°C) and it was positively balmy, with nearly no wind. We did more sledding, more snowballs, and some snow angels. We tried a snow fort, but the snow was too dry.
It’s rarely too cold to go outside and do something. My favorite thing is winter camping.
I usually make an igloo in February, if there’s enough snow, and this year both boys are interested in spending a night sleeping in it. I’ll have to build bigger than usual, so it will be an engineering challenge.
So far this is shaping up to be nothing like last Winter. Last year we had 2 major snow storms a week, and Winter didn’t give up until May. It was the worst I remember since I was a kid.
It was beautiful here today. In the mid thirties, and quite balmy.
Currently it is 8 below zero (Fahrenheit) with light snow, which I consider bordering on inhospitable conditions for a morning doggie-walk.
I’ll hit the gym after work. My New Years resolution is to improve my cardiac functioning and even though it feels stupid to me (a fairly avid walker/hiker) to be going nowhere on a treadmill in front of a TV screen, I feel better afterwards.
Damp, drizzling and breezy is not my idea of a good time, either. One thing about the prairie winters - it can get cold as hell here, but it’s usually sunny and clear. I’ll take cold and sunny over warmer and damp and drizzly any day.
