Anyone Ever Lose Their House Keys IN Their House?

What is this meatloaf that you speak of?

almost two weeks later, did the OP ever find the housekeys?

I did that once, and found the keys a day later in the coat pocket of a jacket that I wear about once every three years. It’s the only place I never thought to check.

I lost my keys at home and couldn’t find them after two days of searching through every box and every clothes pocket. It turned out that they were in the pocket of a coat that I wear about once every five years.

Yes. My spare keys just upped and disappeared into the aether one day. I resisted having a duplicate made for months because I KNEW they were inside somewhere, but gave in, because I was apparently wrong. They clearly de-materialized into thin air. I looked everywhere - those sonsabitches are gone.

One time it took me forever to find them. They were inside of a shoe on the shoe-rack near my door that has a bowl on top of it that I often keep my keys in. I know it sounds obvious in retrospect, but rummaging through my condo, I just never thought - I should check inside a pair of shoes I haven’t worn in months.

eta: so, look inside your shoes.

Cat style of crouching so that no feet, legs or tail are visible… They look like a brick or “meatloaf”

Oh good. I’ll look there first.

I have two doing that between me & my keyboard as I type this. So far just interfering, not helping, thank goodness…

Yep. Around 2001. Came home, unlocked the door, went inside, locked the door behind me and my keys just… vanished. I never found them again.

Good thing you haven’t locked it then, also a great reason not to lock it.

No I have not. But I imagine that it is something that will happen to me as I get older.

I found this thread today. Interestingly enough, though I started the thread, those keys never did turn up. LOL

I lost mine once and couldn’t for the life of me figure out where I put them. I made copies from Ms. P’s keys and forgot about it. Months, or maybe even years, later I found them on the top of the bookshelf that’s just inside our front door. We kept newspaper bags up there that we used to pick up dog doodoo, and she went out when I came in the door. I had grabbed a bag and put my keys down on top of the shelf.

I had a friend who lived in the same building as me. Sometimes we’d go to her place just to grab something before leaving again. In the space of thirty seconds, she’d invariably misplace her keys.

This isn’t about leaving keys in the house, but Ms. P once left her keys on the 4 train in The Bronx. She had to go all the way to Woodlawn, at the end of the line, but they were waiting for her there.

When this thread was started, my answer would have been ‘no’

Since about a year ago, it’s now ‘yes’

I blame Carryon

I have keys to everything in triplicate or more. I lose more keys and lock myself in and out of places all the time. It’s my personal cross to bear. Alas.
ETA I think I have actually found keys I was looking for once, maybe.
.

Apparently refrigerators are a popular place to keep keys. I found mine in there once, too.

Not about keys, but I have a beautifully machined waiter-style stainless steel corkscrew that I just love and use all the time, of a quality that I haven’t seen for sale anywhere for many years. One day it just disappeared. I was simply not willing to give up looking for it, and finally found it. Yes, the refrigerator again, but this time, underneath it. To this day I have no idea how it got there. I blame extraterrestrials.

Retracing steps is usually the answer. I have to help Hubster retrace steps when HE loses something…which is always!

The very BEST lost keys story is from my college days. My dorm roomie kept her room key as a single. We were headed to the dining room, and she said, “Wait! I can’t find my key!”

It’s a little room! We practically dismantled it, looking!

These were the days of the high-waisted, cuffed ladies’ pants. (I wore jeans.) Somehow she had brushed the key from the edge of her desk, towards the floor, right into her cuff.

45 years later, I have collected dozens of lost key stories, but I haven’t been able to top that one!
