Anyone had success growing ginger?

If this belongs in Genral Questions, I am not opposed to it being relocated, but I chose Cafe Society since it was topical for gardening and culinary discussion.

I love the smell and taste of ginger, and I use* it fresh in everything from Asian cooking to pumpkin pies. I had some ginger root that went to sprout, so I thought I would plant it and see what happens. So far I have a lovely green shoot coming up out of the pot, but I don’t quite know what to expect. Will it flower if grown indoors in a container? Will it grow well at all indoors in a container? If put in a larger container, will it ever make enough root to harvest for cooking here at home? Should I try to plant it outside? I’m in mid-Arkansas, so while the weather seems tropical in the summer, our winters can get quite cold and icy. I dabble in herbs and growing things, but ginger is out of my realm of experience.

The experiences and anecdotes of others are much desired.

*Once, I even made some household cleaner that had rosemary, ginger, and lemon in it. WooHoo, I was cutting grease off the cabinets like a …

My only insight on the growing of ginger is that it doesn’t tolerate drying out at ALL, and it definitely relies on a longer photoperiod than is available in Oregon in winter. Keep its feet wet and under a fluorescent light and it will probably do well enough to be transplanted outside although I’d keep it in a greenhouse.

Thanks, LiveOnAPlane, at least now I know it’s theorhetically possible! Those blooms do sound pretty (pink pineapple shaped? weird).

SmartAleq, I’m currently keepiong it nice and moist in my kitchen window. It only gets morning sun, but the over-sink lighting is flourescent.

Ginger is a rhizome, like aspargus, irises and anthuriums that likes sandy soil. Absurdly easy to grow.

For commercial ginger, the blooms aren’t quite as pretty as they sound.

There are quite a few wild and cultivated species that are at least interesting, though.

Oh, and commercial ginger is usually Zingiber officinale, if you wanted to research further.

Thanks for starting this thread FaerieBeth. Just recently I noticed one of my ginger roots sprouting, and figured I’d try to grow it based on this thread. It’s doing so well it already needs a new pot, only two weeks later.

Is yours also growing very quickly? I swear, I can almost see this guy grow.

I get more growth from Mary Ann, actually.
