Anyone have any experience painting cultured stone?

We recently had a portion of the vinyl siding on our house replaced with cultured stone. Specifically, it’s Owens-Corning cultured stone.

Unfortunately, the last bit of it they put up was a flawed batch; it doesn’t quite match the rest of it. The difference is subtle, but once pointed out, you can definitely see it.

Luckily for us, the company that put it up, the place that sells the rock, and Owens-Corning have been great about it; Owens-Corning admitted they had a bad batch, and they are paying to repair it.

What they want to do is to try painting the rock. Apparently, they make a kit that consists of the same stuff that covers the rock to begin with, along with instructions for reproducing any color. They’ll hire a skilled person to do the work, and it comes with the same guarantee as the original cultured rock itself.

It’s tempting to go this route because it’s a pain to have the masons out for another few days, making a mess of our deck. However, we wonder if it’s really going to work. In 5 years, are the painted rocks going to start chipping?

Owens-Corning claims it’s fine, it’s the same stuff that’s on the cultured stone already, and it’ll last forever. But of course they’d say that, right?

So… has anyone ever done anything like this before? How’s it worked out?
