Anyone know what this term means with regards to job application status?

So I applied for a position. I’ve had an in-person interview, then a phone one. I just logged back into their online system earlier today, and noticed that my application status is listed as “on-call.”

Does anyone know what this could mean? I haven’t been offered the position yet (insert finger crossing here), and I’m guessing it may just be specific to the company itself, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask and see if anyone here has any clue. I know what “on-call” means in the general context, but I’m not sure what this could mean for my application status.

Thanks!

Based on the context you provided of having had two interviews already, I would say it means “still under consideration for the job” and is probably a term specific to that company, as I have never heard of it. Then again, I’ve also never heard of a company providing outsiders with an kind of online status update as to where they are in the hiring process. That sounds like it could be inviting trouble in my opinion. The most I’ve ever seen in all the companies I’ve applied to is something that confirms a resume has been submitted and possibly that it has been reviewed, but nothing beyond that unless it is via e-mail from an HR person letting you know the status.

‘On Call’ at my firm is a status that means hired for fill in work. For example, my Branch Office Administrator has tomorrow off. So I have an On Call BOA coming in to answer the phones and such for the day.

No idea at all if it applies to your situation. But it’s a term I’ve heard before.

nevermind

The only thing I can surmise is that you’d be expected to be available at a moment’s notice via phone to come in to work at any given time they feel the need to call you.

Well that was the case with a job I had although the term On Call was never used at any time - I ended up quitting the job as they were persistently calling me in on busy days, which was not in my job description and working 12 days without a proper day off was not what I signed up for.

(it was a video rental place, and the four people who filled the position after me also quit on the same basis)
