Mad World just came out. The trailers I saw before the new year were awesome looking, but money is tight at the moment and I don’t want to blow $40 on a game I have little to no feedback about.
So, anyone played it? What did you like/dislike?
FWIW, I have a Wii. Curious especially if the controls make good use of the Wii remote+nunchuk.
I actually think the game looks kinda dumb. Like someone said “hey nintendo is for kids” and so some people got together to make a game with a shitton of blood and violence so they could point at it and say “look, that’s a “mature” game!” completely missing the point of what a mature game should be.
Then I heard that Matsuno Yasumi was working on the story, and instantly made me want to buy it.
So I’m a bit confused as to whether it’s worth a purchase myself
Nintendo Power also gave it a 9/10. As of now, there aren’t any reviews up on amazon.com tho. I tend to place more trust in a myriad of reviews on amazon than on a single website, so I guess I’ll just have to wait a bit.
Thanks for that link, Pope. Excellent compilation of reviews there. Most seem to be overwhelmingly positive, except the one from EuroGamer. I understand, tho, that certain countries in Europe, notably the UK, have been threatening to withhold a rating (such as Mature or Adult or whatever they have) for the game, which would mean it could not be sold. That sensibility may have influenced the EuroGamer perception, ISTM.
I expect reviews to be up on Amazon soon, as well.
Don’t forget, this is Clover Studios, basically. Viewtiful Joe, Okami, God Hand.
If it wasn’t a little over the top and more than a little tongue in cheek, it wouldn’t be them.
Ok, I went and picked up Mad World today at Fry’s for $45.
I’ve played it for about an hour, and here’s my impressions so far:
HOLY FUCK IS THIS GAME FUN!
This is definitely NOT a children’s game.
The game starts with what has to be the worst, lamest, most pointless intro sequence ever. It seems to have nothing to do with the content of the game and is slooooooow.
Once you start playing, tho… HOLY FUCK!
I’m shoving my chainsaw into guys and ripping them in half. Backhand moves slice them off at the waist. Body slams bend people in ways that they should not bend. Throw them on spikes… over and over and over again. Blood splatters everywhere. Throw tires at people, impale them on street signs, reach into a guy’s chest and pull his still beating heart out. Extra points for combo moves!
The announcers are hilarious. “Ooooh that motherfucker isn’t gettin’ up!”
The announcers and your opponents all curse like sailors. The heavy hardcore rap soundtrack is a great compliment (altho I hope there’s some metal later on, too).
I haven’t had this much fun with a video game in I-don’t-know-how-long! I’d write more, but I want to go throw people into the jet turbine again… BBL!
updates on your opinion? How’s the story (really curious about this as Yasumi Matsuno, one of my favorite story tellers, is responsible for it. He worked on Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics, FFXII (the concept anyway, that’s when he left Squeenix), Vagrant Story, etc etc)
I’m most likely going to pick it up as by all reports it’s pretty damn fun, but my buddy is borrowing my wii at the moment so I see no need of getting it just yet (though I’m still going to order it off play-asia so it’ll be here around the same day I get my wii back). Just curious about your thoughts
The story is simple… kill people, then kill a boss, then play a minigame, then back to killing people to progress to the next boss. It’s a lot like a first person Smash TV, if you’ve been around long enough to remember that great game. You are a participant in a game show of kill-or-be-killed.
What makes it fun is the announcers, and finding new and more horrific ways to do people in. Much of the environment is usable, so parts of cars, street signs, tires, etc. can all be picked up and used to beat on people.
The b&w graphics are very stylish. A bit strange at first, but everything is so well drawn and animated that you get used to it very quickly.
The controls are great and fairly intuitive: you want to hit someone with an uppercut? Press A (which is punch) and move the wii remote up. Backhand? Press A and move your hand like a backhand slap. Certain more complicated moves are often given to you on-screen (like the necksnapping move) which is a big help until you do it enough times to be able to identify when you are able to do the move.
I’ve only played thru the first boss so far. I had to work today and will not have a chance to sit down and play thru the game until Sunday, maybe.
There’s a bunch of reviews up on amazon.com now (including my own colorful-but-shallow review), and most people are saying 6-8 hours of play time to finish the game, but lots of repeat play as you can go back and do it all over again with the new weapons and things you’ve unlocked, and look for others to unlock that you may have missed the first time thru.
