Is it so bad to move to another country because of the political climate? I mean - compared to any other reason, such as the weather, the lifestyle, the work vs. leisure ethic etc. Providing you take into account other factors (such as children, job prospects in other countries and so on) and aren’t totally silly about it, I don’t see that moving countries because you think the political climate would impact on your quality of life is unreasonable.
It’s not a helpful or effective political gesture for your country, I’d agree. But then few people live their lives in selfless ways.
Sure it does. But if Dopers can wish death on American soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq even when some of us have relatives serving there, I hardly think expressing the wish that a secessionist like Diogenes’ father stay where he allegedly wants to be is “being a jerk”.
If the whole thing isn’t just something made up. As is mentioned in the past, none of the celebrities who claimed they were moving if Bush were re-elected actually did it. Hell, even Lee Harvey Oswald came back to the States.
Like I said, you want to leave just because you lost an election, leave. You won’t be missed.
I left in 2002. Not because of Bush, but because of a good job and a whole lot more money and a chance to live in Europe again.
Whilst I’ve been away, I have seen my home, my country which I served to protect and which I used to love, change and most of that change has been negative. Now, after 8 years of Bush’s incompetence, corruption, and the massive polarization of political debate, the leading candidate nakedly pandering to the most repressive and evil elements of American society and selling out whatever personal integrity he once had in a ploy to get elected, as well as the horrifying possibility of having someone so wrong as Palin one heartbeat away and with her own stains of corruption, nepotism, and abuses of power, I find the decision made for me. If these are the ones my countrymen choose in their majority to elect to the highest office in the land and endow with the power to represent them to the rest of the world, I don’t really want to live there anymore as they aren’t my people and logic and facts and reality seem lost on them.
Never mind the high taxes I pay and incredibly expensive property prices for not very much house, it’s still a more forgiving, tolerant, and decent place to live here on this Sceptered Isle. And since I plan on having a family some day, I’d rather have them safer, better educated, and more cosmopolitan rather than more at risk, more ignorant and closed-minded, and taught things I fundamentally disagree with in public schools I have to pay for in my taxes.
So report the post then. I wouldn’t get my hopes up, though.
If you want to play “my post is my cite” with these kind of unprovable assertions, don’t get too frazzled when you get doubted. Especially given your unfortunate tendencies to dismiss actual cites if they disprove your assertions.
This is out of line. It is unnecessary to the discussion and personally insulting.
Back off.
= = =
In the larger context of what may be said about whom, I will type slowly so that those who could not follow all the previous discussions on the topic can keep up.
The SDMB prohibits direct personal insults and threats against members.
As an internet site with membership from all walks of life across the U.S. and with a significant international component, it is probably impossible to insult any group without offending the sensibilities of some member of the SDMB.
As long as the insults or maledictions are aimed at a generic group and not tied directly to the membership of any poster in that group, we do, indeed, let such comments alone.
A direct insult against a poster’s parent is hardly a general comment about a group.
Example:
Had a poster stated that every member of the diplomatic corps was an idiot in the context of a discussion on U.S. relations with the world, DtC would have no cause for complaint. (Note: DtC did not report this incident.)
If DtC were then to loudly protest that his father was a member of the insulted group and that he was offended, he would have been told to take it to the Pit as he would be going out of his way to proclaim his offended feelings when the insult had not been aimed at him.
Example 2:
We have one notable poster who routinely makes disparaging remarks about one very large group of humanity.
There have been a very few occasions where that poster has expressly linked his general insults to the participation of a poster in that large group.
On every (rare) occasion (of which I am aware) that that poster has linked his insults directly to another member of the SDMB, he has been admonished.
I believe telling another poster that you have reported their post is discouraged, and I think it is inappropriate for moderators to announce who has reported what, but you do what you think is right.
At any rate, I hope you are not too disappointed to find that reporting my post got you nowhere. You were not called a liar, and as the sticky says, telling another Doper that you don’t believe his assertions is the heart and soul of debate.
As I said, it is more or less unprovable. If you want to splash the details of your family’s life all over the Internet, knock yourself out.
Maybe it’s even true. As I said, others have done it. Lee Oswald is one, no doubt there were others.
They won’t be missed. People who would leave their country just because their boy lost an election are idiots. We already have too many of those.
Or . . . be an English teacher! Depending on the country, you doesn’t even need tuh speak English all that good!
As for me . . . let’s just say that i’z in Azia reapin’ yo trade defizit.
ETA: there are also very hardworking and competent English teachers out there, I was relating my experience with people I’ve encountered in real life in Asia, certainly not aimed at any posters here.
Good idea! Now, where else can we find a country where big businesses hire illegals by the busload while government turns a blind eye to both immigration violations and sweatshop working conditions, but on the other hand forces local hospitals to serve illegals (for free, of course, since employers don’t have bother with pesky benefits or workers comp) to the point that they must shut down? Heh heh heh, whatever country that may be, we’ll sure show them.
You are correct that making a big deal about reporting a post is discouraged although it is not againast any rule.
Since no Moderator has announced who has reported any post, your second claim is mere dishonest posturing.
And you think that a direct comparison between his father and Lee Harvey Oswald somehow floats under the barrier for direct personal insults?
You have, in fact, strongly suggested that other posters have been lying in this thread, although you have been cagey enough to used weasel word language to avoid a direct charge.
However, in the context of offering a direct personal insult immediately after I had pointed out that similar statements were against the rules, I would have to say that your overall behavior in this thread has gone well into the realm of being a jerk and you are officially Warned to back off.
Wow, what a bunch of arrogance on display in this thread.
Guess what, folks, I didn’t swear an oath of loyalty to the United States of America. It’s just a coincidence of nature that this is where my mother spit me out. Sure, it’s noble and honorable to stay and fight to change things – which many of us have been doing for years, even decades.
But there is nothing ignoble about looking at other societies and deciding your life might be better in one of them. You know, there are other really great countries out there – the U.S. isn’t the Be All and End All of Great Nations.
I’ve left the country before (though not for political reasons) – I lived in Mexico for a year and a half. And my husband is a Danish citizen. Denmark is an awesome country and we have pretty much settled on the idea of retiring there.
But just because we might consider relocating there sooner, if we become dissatisfied with the direction this country is headed, doesn’t make us “unpatriotic”. That’s just ridiculous.
