Anyone trying out Star Trek Online?

I’ve been lucky it seems. That particular bug was occurring multiple times for some people. I only had it happen once to me. I also lost a kit reward once, luckily I didn’t want it anyway…

I have a full compliment of bridge officers now. I can’t wait to unlock the next tier of ships…

I finally managed to make a character yesterday (couldn’t earlier because of a combo internet problems on my end and server queues on theirs). I’m impressed at how much polish they’ve put on the interface lately, at least at ground-level. I haven’t had a chance to do ship combat yet, but I hope that’s better too.

Okay, I broke down and bought the game when I saw that I could buy it off of Steam here in Japan. It’s downloading now.

It arrived on my doorstep yesterday, should be beaming up tonight.

Woohoo! Made it to Lt. Commander, with a new ship to run- USS PIttsburgh.

Look for me under Steele@Victor_Steele to form the fleet, team up, trade, etc…

Thomas McHale@candidgamera is up. Do we have an SDMB channel yet?

Simeon@shadeedge here. Still on my wee starter ship thanks to some horrifying lag, but oh well!

I’m tempted to buy a new computer for this.

Almost… 20% of the way through Leiut 9

Fujishiro@Pleonast

I started a “SDMB” channel in Champs, and since the channels are cross-game, it should be there in STO, too.

I’ve actually been playing more than I expected too. Just hit Commander and got my heavy escort. Still woefully underequipped though.

Any thoughts on the game? Is it worth getting? How is the combat like?

I think the game captures the martial aspect of Star Trek quite well. The exploration side is adequate and the diplomacy is weak. If you’re interested in playing the Federation (or the Klingon Empire) at war, this game should appeal to you.

Combat is in two venues. Space combat is the best part of the game. You must balance position, orientation, power levels of your ship and your timing of abilities. It’s in quasi-3D. There’s many options for your character–your own captain’s skills (mostly passive bonuses), your bridge officers abilities (skills with timers), and the equipment loaded on your ship. It can all be rather complex, but the basics are simple enough (fly your ship and press space to fire weapons).

Ground combat is simple, but fun. The away team is always your captain and four officers of your choice (or player friends). Everyone has a weapon with three attacks–regular, special, and melee. Special attacks can be combined to do extra damage. There are also abilities on timers that do useful stuff.

I enjoy the game, don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t feel like it has lasting appeal (to me). There doesn’t appear to be much content yet. I mean, there isn’t really any kind of lasting economy. The game feels small. I was hoping for something on the scale of EVE Online where you could make a living through searching for the best trade routes between combat missions or relaxing while collecting resources.

I’m quite willing to spend a month or two on it to get a better feel.

So far it’s really easy. I’m only Lieut 5 though. I hope it gets harder, or that at least the PvP is fun/challenging.

Man, the server went down right after I created a Klingon character. KE has way cooler character/ship customization options than the Fed. I don’t think I’m going back.

Well its always fun looking for the great historical SF references amoung the ships.

Just saw the USS Enders Game fly by

I was able to grab Carmen Ibanez and the USS Rodger Young.

stuff I have learned so far-

  1. the transwarp (hearthstone)button doesn’t seem to be mentioned at all in the tutorials and isn’t on screen by default, I didn’t find it until I first set up my skills bar at around lieutenant 5.

  2. it takes a long time for weapon energy to recover after you drop out of full impulse, up to 10 - 15 seconds if you have been travelling long enough. This makes a huge difference to your first pass dps. If the baddies will be tough, drop out of full impulse at about 15km and wait for your energy to increase again. My escort can annihilate anything up to a +2 battleship on the first pass if I do this, if not I can’t be sure of killing even a frigate.

  3. exploration missions and patrols are probably the quickest means of levelling up. Cryptic really needs to hire some decent writers for the grounds missions, I am getting really sick of killing hundreds of Klingons.

has anyone figured out to get half way decent pvp? When the teams are equal it’s really fun, but as soon as one team gets the upper hand they can just form a blob and pick off the other sides ships as they spawn.

Got My Lt Commander promo, and picked up an Excalibur Class Crusier.
