Anyone trying out Star Trek Online?

I’m in the channel, but I never see any chatter on there.

I think because our playtimes have minimal overlap. :smack: Someday more than one of us will be on at a time.

I’ve got a 5 day buddy key, if someone wants it. Just PM me.

Pleonast, OI only saw your friend request tonight. I would have replied sooner, but I just did not see it.

Right now I am at Captain 8, but the only missions I can find are are explore or patrol. I think I am missing a contact somewhere, else there would be more. (if not the STO forums would be exploding about it). I do have one patrol missionI have not been able to complete solo…the Venden Sector. I may give it another go tonight. But the battleship there spawns a shitload of fighters that tear my shields to shreds. If I could only disable it long enough to disable it I might win…or if I had a fruiser instead of a science ship. None of my tricks seem to work.

Oh well, I’ll have to give it another crack before I go to bed tonight.

No problem. It’s nice that you can friend someone who’s not online, but there’s no good indicator to tell them of it.

I also have an invitation out to candid.

I saw a thread on the STO forums about something like this. Here it is.

There are some missions if you just stop by solar systems. Particularly the ones that arn’t part of that sector’s patrol. There is some key in the map based on the symbols, But I never figured i out.

I’ll have some extra free time tonight, so I should be in-game longer than usual. I’ll keep an eye out for others. Be sure to join the SDMB channel, so it’s easier to chat.

Any players reading right now? We are looking for enough to start a fleet.

Sure, I’ll join. I’ll warn you I haven’t been playing much lately, just been busy. I’m online now though. Message Trillian@Krypnomicon.

Sweet, We now have a fleet.
The Klingon Squid Squad.
Anybody interested in joining let us know.

I’d like in! Simeon@shadeedge, I think I have some people on my friends list already.

Yay! We have a Doper guild now. I put some tribbles in the fleet bank. Feel free to take some or leave food for them.

I made LtCmdr finally and requisitioned my first Science Vessel. I’m still getting used to it. I’m having trouble deciding how to allocate power. Auxiliary power is used for my science powers, but with their long cooldown timers, I’m not sure how useful it is to keep much power there. As opposed to weapons and shields, which I’m using continually. I try to find a fair balance.

It’s nice to promote my away team to Lts. Twice the number of special powers!

I’ll try to get joined up when I can. I accepted a couple of friend requests the last time I was on.

The NYT gives the game a lukewarm review: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/20/arts/television/20start.html?scp=1&sq=jason%20trek%20online&st=cse

I’ve read several reviews now and they’ve all used variants of the phrase “this game is boring and repetetive”.

From the review:

I’d say that’s worse than lukewarm.

This was my experience in the 10-day trial. Maybe you get more interesting missions later in the game, but 90% of the ones I was given were “Go here, fight these, come back.” And the combat takes forever, going in circles in space all the while, trying to keep your weapons pointed at the enemy ships.

The thing is, there wasn’t really much ST flavor to the missions I was given…they could easily have been generic space opera game missions. The only things that were really Star Trek were the names of the planets and the look of the ships and uniforms…even the main enemies in the lower levels were ones that basically were only mentioned in various series, Orion pirates, rather than low-level Klingons or Romulans or Cardassians, or even space ameobas or something like that.

Sorry guys. About two days after we got the guild formed my back went wonky again, so I have been keeping my home computer sessions to about 5 minutes. Which unfortunately rules out much gaming.

I usually get in about an hour each night. I got up to Commander rank over the weekend. And I finally advanced past the initial crafting contact.

I finally put in a little more time yesterday - still slaving away in the Lt. Commander ranks.

Does anyone else feel that the equipment you can get feels a little… same-y? Like, all the personal weapons I find have almost exactly identical DPS on the primary attacks.
