Anyone trying out Star Trek Online?

I’m up to Lt 6, which means I can start a Klingon. Anyone tried that yet? What’s it like? I never got high enough in Beta to unlock the Klingons.

I found a tribble. And it had babies! If anyone wants one, let me know. They eat food in the same inventory area, and spawn more tribbles when they do.

Got it. Thanks! I’ve been playing all morning…we had snow day. I like it. Combat is much more mobile than something like WoW. Took a little while to get used to it.

Arghh! Man do I hate Romulan ground officers. The have infinite and immediate shield regen. Takes like 5 minutes to kill each one, and if you run into a boss group of a Commander, 2 sub-commanders, 2 medics, and 2 normal Centurions it takes forever to kill them. I need to figure out how to disable them. Because all of my away team members have a unique talent to save their exposes until right after I fire my exploit, and it doesn’t recharge to fire again before they recover.

I still an pretty clueless about bridge officers. I have several blue ones, but they don’t seem any better than my normal ones, who I have already spent tons of BO points on promtoing and training. Do they expect you to have a space team and an away team set?

Has anyone gotten through tier 1 of the crafting anomalies yet? I must have made 80 Large hypos and still nothing.

Once I find 2 Plasma Turrets for aft mounts Things should be pretty sweet.

They tend to get really mad if you try to attach the jumper cables to their forehead ridges.

From what I’ve read the gameplay seems kind of thin, so I’ll wait and see if they add more meat to the gameplay. I loathe grinding with a passion (along with several other MMO tropes).

Melee weapons go right through shields. Ignore 'em completely. You can get Bat’leh on DS9.

Just remember the tier 2 ships only give you 1 extra bridge officer slot. You get a tac slot in escort, engi in cruiser and sci in… well… science vessels. Also this extra slot is the only one that gives you access to you BOs tier 2 skill.

Having said that unless they’ve really changed the costs from beta it’s very easy to buy one of each ship type by the time you reach Lt Cmdr. So you can always see which you prefer, I loved doing hit-and-run strikes with my escort.

That explains why a Klingon Swordmaster was cutting off big chunks of my health. I usually don’t micromanage my officers, but I had to order them to focus fire on him while I dodged and ran around.

Is it possible to put an Ensign in a Lt slot?

If you have a turret, swordmasters like to go for them and ignore you.

Interesting, the last patch cleaned some stuff up. I was wondering why I never found the PVP stuff. I guess there was a bug where I never got offered the missions before, but my Contacts list now has a couple Lt. level PVP missions.

You can, but it’s not really worth it. A Lt position allows you to use both tier 1 & 2 skills for that officer. Just putting an ensign in that position leaves an empty skill slot. Also although you are limited to one tier 2 skill in space, on the ground your BOs can all use their full skill sets. It cost next to nothing to promote your officers, so do it anyways.

If you don’t have a tier 2 space skill you want to spend points on (and remember you can’t get promoted without spending skill points) you have two options.

Either leave the tier 2 space skills at base level (remember for space skills extra levels purchased affect the cooldown timers, not the effectiveness of the skill itself), or look at the officers available from the requisitions desk. If you see one with a skill you like, purchse them and get them to train one of your current officers with that skill.

I was just pointing it out because when I got my first escort, I put points into both my tac officers level 2 skills. Then I realsied it wouldn’t let me assign one of their skills to a bridge position.

By the way did we ever get a fleet? I;d be interested in joining.

Well, they look awesome. Their race and ship customizations are way cooler than the Federation’s. And their ships get cloaking, naturally.

Only problem is there really isn’t any content in the game for them. Only PvP. And don’t get me wrong, I love PvP, but doing the exact same missions over and over again to level gets a little repetitive, even for an MMO. (not that the Federation’s PvE missions aren’t fairly repetitive too, but at least it gets mixed up a little)

I’m still available for a fleet; the only Doper I’ve encountered is Pleonast, so far.

I’m almost at level 14, and I have the Doomsday Device as an active mission. Who would like to join in the fun?

No SDMB fleet that I know of yet. I’m still interested in joining. I’m typically on sometime in the evening Pacific Time, but not for long. My internet connection is flaky, so be patient if I don’t respond to /tells quickly.

Anybody else collecting Tribbles?

My in game is Creellia@wolfman13393, maybe we can get enough people on sometime this weekend to throw a fleet together.

I just sent you a friend invite in the game, Creellia so don’t be shocked to see one from Nathan Peel@shizaru.

Hmmm…thge only person I’ve seen in game os wolfman, so I guess most if any dopers playing are basically trying to see if they want to sub after the free thirty days. I feel ya if that is true…I wouldn’t join a guild or fleet in a game until I was sure that I or my guild/fleetmates would be around after the initial free period.

I’ve never seen more than one other Doper online at a time. There’s six of us joined in the SDMB channel there. I’ve upped the permissions of you all there.

I’m about half a block away from Lt Commander. I’ve decided on going with Science Vessels.

I’ve found the character builder linked to in this STO forum thread useful. It lets you plan out how to spend your skill points. I also found this webpage very useful for helping to decide where to spend points. I really like the “skill” system STO has (although it’s actually more like character attributes). There’s a lot of flexibility; a lot of choices about how specialized to become.

Did we decide on a fleet name?

I had missed that there was a channel, I joined it now.
