I bought it over the weekend when it came on sale on Steam. Not sure if I like it or not though. The graphics are a little off, and the tactical game play just seems…un-imersive I guess. Might be jaded from playing XCOM where there is so much action for a turn based game. I admit though that I’m only a little into the game so far, so maybe it will grow on me. Anyone playing? Thoughts?
Did you play the original Wasteland? I’m thinking that the Wasteland 2 team spent more effort on story and settings than on the actual tactical combat, considering that the original was for most intents and purposes, a text adventure.
Yeah, I played the original one when it first came out. It’s been a LONG time, but you are right…that’s what they are going for. There is still a lot of text in the game…most things you click on bring up a text dialogue, and of course talking to NPCs is a text based dialogue though there is some voice acting in the game too. It just seems a bit clunky to me now I guess.
I do not want to ruin the experience playing a basically beta version, plus i get a free copy from my planescape 2 kickstater so i will be waiting for that. Everything i’ve seen so far looks great though.
Yeah, I generally don’t go in for the beta access when I’m putting in for a Kickstarter game. The release of the beta has me excited, but I’m prepared to wait. Unfortunately, I couldn’t swing the money to get in on the Kickstarter for Wasteland 2, though I do get a copy with my pledge for Tides of Numenera.
Speaking to a friend of mine, I found I couldn’t remember which game was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment – Tides of Numenera or Pillars of Eternity. Checking back, it seems they are both making such a claim, though in different ways.
I’m playing the beta.
The beta is intentionally less fleshed out than the final game will be. Many locations aren’t included, and the ones that are have less stuff.
Granted, the combat probably won’t change much. (Barring additional unimplemented skills that might come into play.) But like Wasteland and Fallouts 1 and 2, combat is secondary to the storyline, NPC interactions, and atmosphere.
There are some tactical things added in (e.g. taking cover, splitting the party into multiple groups for flanking, etc.), but those are more window dressing than actual combat necessity. (I’m guessing you never actually have to use them.)
I’m playing on default difficulty, though. Maybe things change on the hard difficulty.
