Anyone watch Justified on FX?

I had not seen it till I bought Seaon 1 at Target. I was late to work the next day because I watched 2 disks at one sitting.

Yeah, I like it.

Also, Olyphant was the lead in The Crazies. An exceptional horror flick!

I hadn’t considered that. I have a desktop PC and the “good” TV is on a different floor. But there’s a second TV about 8 feet from the computer, so if they make cables that long, maybe! I’ll ask my daughter’s BF about it – he knows about that stuff.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Jane Doe, apologies for the hijack.

Between Justified, Archer and It’s always sunny in philadelphia FX has by far the best shows on TV right now. Olyphant was great in The Crazies too.

So what did you think of this week’s episode? We finally learned what Mags and Boyd were up to. And the ending was explosive, to say the least.

I’m really looking forward to discovering Boyd’s angle. I think he’s got a lot more up his sleeve for Mags and her clan. He’s disliked by the clan (and dislikes them himself) too much to simply climb into bed with them without having an ulterior motive.

I think Boyds angle is simple: get PAAAAAAAID (and split it with the elder Givens in a more equitable manner than Mags or the mining company).

He’s also really good in the underrated thriller The Perfect Getaway. He’s a great actor(though I’ve never seen Hitman).

One question about Raylan’s parents. I believe his mother is dead, but who is the woman his father is married to? I think she’s referred to as Aunt [something or another]. Is that a courtesy title or was she, perhaps, his mother’s sister?

(And BTW, I read somewhere that Elmore Leonard thinks the character wears the cowboy hat way too much.)

I believe Helen is indeed Raylan’s mother’s sister.

Yeah, Mags is amazing – I haven’t cheated and looked on IMDB, because I’m afraid it’ll break my heart, but I like to imagine that the actress is indeed from Kentucky (even though, deep down, I’m sure she’s British or something). But she’s freaking nailing it. I also like Dickie – who I finally realized is Oppom from Saving Private Ryan – he’s kind of menacing in a weird, hillbilly way, but kind of a doofus, too, with just enough smarts to be dangerous but not enough to be really dangerous.

Although I must say the counterfeit money, two-episode arc was silly, even if it pays dividends.

I agree, it was very mickey mouse. What I have noticed in series two is the focus on the women characters and how they deal with things. The writing is very strong and the actresses uniformly excellent; Mags, Ava, Winona, Rachael (though only one episode) Loretta and Carol Johnson are great characters in interesting predicaments.

It’s a great show. Here’s to season three.

One of my favorite characters, because he makes me chuckle, is Dewey. I hope he gets sprung so that he can be in future episodes for Raylan to repeatedly throttle.

I watch it each week and agree that it is well-acted. Mags is such a vile woman, reminds me of women I saw growing up in a trailer park - and the actress just nails it.

It is starting to feel a little bit like a soap opera though - I guess any drama does.

Love… friggen’* love* Justified. Although a teentsy bit of the Timothy Olyphant magic rubbed off when I heard him in an interview on NPR. Is it just me, or is he dumb as a sack of hammers? Or was he just reeeeaaaallly nervous? Or stoned?

Either way, I can’t get enough of this show. FX’s re-run policy pisses me off, though. We missed the first episode, and now we’re perpetually a week behind. They don’t re-run it at all (at least in our area), and the only way to see it after the initial airing is on-demand, eight days later. Meaning last week’s episode airs the day after the current one. ::smack::

She is southern. Texas I believe. Really good interview from the AV Club.

I did like how he took a bit of piss out of Terry Gross’s pretentious questioning. Can’t remember the exchange now, but he basically just laughed at her reading waaay too much into how he and Goggins prepare for stuff.

It was a bizarre interview overall. He threw out a bunch of pretentious actor-speak that didn’t always quite track with the questions… she asked a bunch of bizarrely pretentious questions, and extra-bizarrely, tried to rake him over the coals asking if he felt guilty for fudging his acting resume to get his first acting job, like twenty years ago. WTF?
The whole thing struck me as kind of weird. Like maybe they’d just banged in a broom closet, or something :D;)

Here’s the Fresh Air link in case anyone wants to hear the interview!

Just another vote for the show. It’s the one I DVR and make sure I see on my own.

I didn’t need the missing money episodes, but overall the show delivers.

My favorite scene - the most Elmore Leonard-y, IMHO - was the ep when the other Marshall - the by-the-book African American woman - has to chase down her gone-bad brother in law. At the end, a few of the Marshalls are passing a flask and comparing notes about their difficult fathers. Both funny and poignant at the same time. Just one of those “real” moments that are incredibly hard to write, act and generally pull off. They did.

I really look forward to Justified every week. Just like in Deadwood, the dialogue makes this show for me. It’s poetic here and feels good, but nowhere near as Shakespearean as Deadwood’s was.

Now if I can just stop seeing Dickey as Dr. Faraday from Lost, I’ll be okay.

I’m a little behind, but to me the magic of Justified is that you have this incredibly realistic setting populated by all these larger-than-life characters. The look, the set dressing, the scenery is so incredibly detailed and resonates so strongly true, but all the people are dialed up to 11: their leading traits, be it bravery or intelligence or empathy or stupidity or strength are all exaggerated beyond what mortal men can bear. It’s like the greek gods have all been stranded in Bumfuck, Kentucky. This isn’t a criticism: I think it’s a stylistic choice, and a lovely one.

Hillbilly Shakespeare.
