Yes - as a way to get out from under some part of the mortgage - but at the divorce ‘discussion’, he went off the wire, acting like he no longer wanted the divorce.
It was on the way to that that we first see the hitman following Winona/Raylan - later that day is when they attempt the hit.
Raylan told Gary he wasn’t going to tell Winona the real reason for the attack - he’s protecting her as much as himself at this point. Part of the discussion with Gary was that gary attempted to call off the hit but it was too late.
If Raylan was the focal point, the hitmen would not have hit them together - since Winona was, getting them both was a ‘bonus’ and easier to keep focus off of Gary since Raylan has a number of folks after him at this point - which is why even Raylan first thought he was the target and call Fl and went to maggs to see if he was the target.
I still don’t know where they are going to go with that whole storyline (the frankfort folks in general, not the gary/winona thing), but it clearly isn’t over yet.
It is far from season 1 Gary - but Gary is far from the season 1 version - he’s much more desperate and he’s damn near lost everything, including winona - at the end of season1, Winona and Rayland was a one night deal, its much more than that now. He’s even back in bed with the folks that tried to kill him in season 1, showing just how desperate he’s become.
How did Raylan avoid getting shot to pieces? Dirty rat Dickie shot Ava in the funbag? Daddy Raylan? Winona again fed up with Raylan? Not much of a surprise re Mags. Boo if the Emmys ignore Margo Martindale.
Killer season finale. Just makes the wait all that more painful.
I won’t be able to watch until tomorrow but had to peek in here anyway. Don’t know how I feel if Winona dumps Raylan again, but it’s gotta be difficult to live with someone whose job is so dangerous. Kudos to the spouses who somehow make it work.
I was flipping channels the other day and saw Mags and Raylan’s daddy dancing together like a happy married couple. I have no idea what movie/TV show it might have been. It was weird.
I’m still not sure about Mags and Loretta, and maybe that’s what the writers intended. Sepinwall seems to think that Mags’ confession that she killed Loretta’s father is final proof that Mags really loved her.
I’m not sure about that, unless Mags’ feelings about Loretta were part of the reason for the murder. “Here’s this sweet girl with a loser for a daddy. This guy crossed me so he needs to die, so there’s that. Plus, if he’s dead, I can take Loretta under my wing, the sweet girl I never had.”
Because otherwise, we have to believe that a girl Mags barely knew meant more to her than her own sons.
I’m still puttin’ together thoughts on where this leaves us -
As for Loretta - apparently Maggs always wanted a daughter and saw something in her that Mags had lost - the only other ‘hope’ she had was in the sherrif son and family - she was clearly tired of the life and was looking for a way out.
Did anyone else notice the back of his truck? ‘Bennet Police’ - first time I saw that was last nite
The scene that will stay with me is from a couple episodes back, when Mags is asking Raylan if she can see Loretta. She’s like a grieving mother until Raylan’s final “No”, and then her eyes get hard and cold. It’s impossible to say why she wanted to see Loretta, to hug her or kill her. And Raylan in that scene, not sure of Mags’ motivation, so he’s sympathetic, then neutral, and then firm, but you can tell he’s still not sure how to take her.
I read somewhere that the writers didn’t plan for Loretta to stay through the whole season but she impressed them enough to keep her. Also read that Margo Martindale had real tears in that last scene with Loretta, she was so impressed with the kid.
I didn’t think the town’s name was Bennet - thats why it struck me - I gues it could be. All we really know is “Harlan County” (and there is no ‘real’ town called bennet in ky).
I always took that scene between Magg’s and Raylan as Magg’s trying to take his measure as well - she found that she couldn’t manipulate him like she had hoped and got mad about it - resolved to solve it another way - I never took it as her only wanting loretta back so she could kill/harm her - I think she truly hoped Loretta would take Maggs as ‘momma’ and carry on.
I would agree, except they, uh, sort of killed off half the cast in the last few episodes!
I don’t think I have ever seen so many main characters drop like flies in a single series!
Who’s left for next season?!
Still, by doing this, it was truly an amazing season finale.
And despite the fact that Mags was an evil person, I am going to miss her the most - she was by far the strongest character of the season. I am not sure if that was due to the writing, or her acting ability, but I say, “Give her the Emmy now!”
Boyd, Arlo, The Memphis Mafia… There are a lot of people left for next season to be antagonists, as well as new people who can be brought in (even though the Bennets apparently ran the county, we heard not a word about them in season 1 and then all of a sudden here they are, a force with which to reckon).
I skipped over all the postings talking about the finale because I haven’t watched it yet. But Lordy, I love that show! I’m sorta distracted by Boyd’s grill but other than that, it’s perfect. As an aside, I watched the movie “Secretariat” over the weekend and the woman who plays Mags is in it and playing a really sweet character. I just couldn’t believe her in the role because I kept seeing her smashing Coover’s fingers with a hammer!
OK, since Surly Chick hasn’t seen the finale yet, I’ll stick this in a spoiler box.
I was wondering about that drink Mags offered to Raylan. Did she take the two glasses from the same place on the counter or did she reach into the lower cabinet for one of them? I was wondering how she kept track of the poisoned glasses from the clean ones. And I assumed that she was going to poison Raylan in the same way that she poisoned Loretta’s father but the writer of the AV Club write-up of the episode said he thought that both glasses were poisoned (before seeing the last bit).
BTW, is there any real-world analog to the poison that she used? Something that could be left dry on the bottom of a glass but that would fairly quickly kill a person from just a small sip of moonshine drunk from it.
And who shot Doyle, the police chief son? I assumed it was the sharpshooter Tim.
