Let me give you some quick advise–you are not 16 here. YOu don’t know this, but being 16 in RL means that people cut you a lot of slack. All 16 year olds get this grace period as they find their feet in the real world. On the SDMB, however, we assume everyone is an adult, and we judge them by those standards. We acknowledge no child progidies. It is not enough to be smart for your age–you just gotta be smart. This is a good thing, and I think it is why many of the teenagers we have on the boards here like it–they are finally getting the respect they think they deserve, and they learn quickly that that means getting the critisism they deserve, as well. We also loose kids, who are used to being hot shit because they are really really smart for 14 year olds when they realize that here they are compared to our average 30 year old without any age-based-handicap, and they come out merely average. Ultimiltly, being treated (and judged) as an adult will make you a better thinker and speaker–and the day is not far off where the real world won’t give you any license based on your age, either.

Manda JO. I completely understand what you’re saying. Just to clarify, I was referring to the two people, I think, who seemed to make a reference to my age and were a bit abrupt with me. They weren’t called on it, and I generalized when I said people aren’t called on their prejudice toward teenagers. And I feel that a few of the people assumed I haven’t had any life experience because of my age. I’ve hardly led a full life, but I have had a few experiences that have made me more mature. I realized, even when I was in high school, that the teachers coddled us and were mostly lenient, much too lenient, with us. But now that I’m in college I’m treated as an adult. I haven’t gone out of my way to tell people my age, because maybe they would be easier on me, and I don’t want that. I know it will be a long time before I’m grown, but I think I’m more mature than a lot of people, mainly those my age. If I haven’t fully grasped what you were saying, please call me on it. I’ve got a lot to learn.
