I like the fact that there’s no indication that the character of Sgt. Hoffman is a K-9 officer; he seems to be a regular police officer who just happens to be played by a dog.
That was my reaction, too. Police Squad (I have it on DVD) was, for lack of a better way to put it, more densely packed with jokes. In any given scene there’d be something in the dialog, a sight gag and something weird in the background.
But there were only six episodes of Police Squad, so this has already outlasted it.
Hell, I’ll have to watch it. I missed the show thus far, but I’d watch Rashida Jones read the phone book, so I’m already hooked.
OK, lets say there’s been a mixed reaction.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Really enjoying this so far. Very dumb and goofy and perfect.
You might have to be in the right mood to enjoy this kind of thing.
Sledgehammer also suffered from this a bit, funny as hell but with reduced joke density.
I hadn’t heard of this series and will check it out by and by, but I also suggest the British A Touch of Cloth for comparable humour.
I really enjoy this (and I loved Police Squad! which I also own on DVD). I think my favorite character so far is Angie’s boss, Lt. “Chet” Atkins".
Glad I stumbled over this thread — this is the funniest show I’ve seen in a while.
“…and SLEEP!”
A Touch of Cloth is awesome. Batters you with gags.

Well, in any case, it might help you to know that a large segment of the public hates the show.
A large segment of people are also voting for Donald Trump, too. Doesn’t make it right.
The show is funny.
I took the title literally as there’s a movement to bring back the Naked Gun movies with Ed Helms as the star. I thought perhaps this was the hook.
I said might.
So far, I have to agree with you. I’ve watched about 3 or 4 episodes, and it’s reasonably entertaining, but hasn’t quite clicked with me yet. On a ten-point scale, this show is maybe 5 or 6 for me. We’ll see if it grows on me, but, I don’t know–it just doesn’t quite have the campy carefree silliness of the Zucker brothers work. I can’t quite put my finger on it, though. I don’t want it to be an exact copy of their work, of course, but it just doesn’t “swing” for me, to use a jazz idiom.
BTW, is there a name for the Police Squad/Naked Gun/Airplane/Top Secret style of comedy?
“Parody,” maybe? The laughs come from our mental comparisons with very familiar genre (police/airline-disaster/spy, etc) works that litter television screens and B-movie history.
That’s in contrast to something like “Mr. Bean,”—a comedy of character/pratfall arts.
Hilarious?
I’ve always heard it referred to as Slapstick Comedy
