hangs head in shame
Sheesh! At least I had a good excuse (I was at a surprise party for my brother’s 40th birthday).
Any of those three dates will work fine for me. Besides, I’d hate to miss Triskademus if we hold it in June.
If any Pittsburgh area Dopers are following this thread, I may be able to offer a lift, depending on what else is going on.
September might also be iffy for me, again, if I stay at this job, as we’ve got yet another friggin’ tent sale near the end of September. but as long as it’s the weekend BEFORE the Fall Equinox I should be okay… I think. So 3. with a secondary backup vote for 1.
Well, chances of creating a tie look pretty grim, so far.
Rats.
This whole democracy thing was less fun than I figured. I vote for September.
Tris
There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm for September.
Is there anyone who is adamantly against the idea of September, right before the Equinox?
I am strongly against the idea of September, because Rosh Hashanah is almost always in September. And it seems like every second or third year Rosh Hashanah falls on Saturday & Sunday. So I vote for June.
Sure you get another chance. We were looking at the pictures Tris brought of prior events and were wondering what became of you.
And the musical entertainment.
Meantime, I’m happy with the Saturday nearest the Summer Solstice. My most pressing concern is dog days of summer, if only because I’m a cat person.
According to my calendar table, Rosh Hashanah for the next few years starts on:
2006: Saturday 9/23
2007: Thursday 9/13 (Yom Kippur Saturday 9/22)
2008: Tuesday 9/30
2009: Saturday 9/19
Which means that us Jews wouldn’t be there for a fall 2007 picnic.
I bet there are several of us who can’t make it if it’s the same weekend as Rosh Hashanah.
Thanks to your foresight, though, we can plan for a different weekend in September, Ben. Maybe the one prior to Rosh haShanah?
But, but, . . .
How the heck do we figure out when Rosh Hoshanah is?
Is there an on line calculator for Jewish Holidays?
Tris
Rosh Hashanah falls on the first of Tishri on the lunar calendar every year, so we know what solar calendar date it’ll coincide with, and it varies. This year, it falls on September 23, so it would be a problem if we assume we’re having it the Saturday closest to the equinox. Next year, it falls on the 13th, and in 2008, it’s on the 30th, so there will be no conflict.
Given the fact that it coincides with the equinox once every three years, I think we’re still safe if we decide on September; we can always adjust and go a week earlier, if we’re so inclined.

And soccerbaby, Airman’s sister, votes for September, as well.

Assuming the final date is fixed at least a month in advance, I have no preference for any particular week or month.
If it’s May, I might make it; nobody at school has bothered with any sort of calendar for next year yet. June I definitely can’t do: going on a Choir trip to Europe, and either weekend (I’m too lazy to pull up the Calendar to figure out which is closer) would be blocked. September…It’s vaguely possible, but there’s only one school on my college list close enough to have a remotely comfortable drive to PA, and two others for which it is even possible. GA to PA simply isn’t happening.
Sounds like just about everyone either prefers September or is good with it, as long as we tweak as necessary for the Jewish holidays.
Going once, going twice…
Sold! to the gentleman on the left wearing a yarmulke. ;j We’re doing this in 2007 when?
