In a PM, ScubaBen asked me if I would mind spear-heading a discussion of Gettysdope for this fall.
Well, I don’t mind, but the problem is, I’m of very little use in the actual doing, since I’m four hours away at this point.
So, who is in the general Gettysburg, PA, area who doesn’t mind doing the mundane stuff like booking the pavilion?
If you’d all like, I’ll happily track proposed attendees and what they’ll be bringing; IOW, I can do the ‘paperwork’, but the legwork will have to be done by someone more nearby to Gettysburg.
Anyone have any proposed dates? It’s already early September, and on September 14th, I’ll be having a nephrectomy, so I don’t imagine I’d be able to attend personally before, say, mid-October. However, that may seem too late for some.
So, speak up, MAD’s, and let your voices be heard!
It’s about a 3 hour drive for me; I may actually be able to come! Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to spearhead the planning either. But keep me on your list!
Columbus Day, October 12th, would probably work out okay here.
I won’t really know what to expect from my surgery recovery until this Tuesday (when I have some pre-op testing, plus a pre-op consult with my surgeon), but if hubby can drive (he’s only home every other weekend), October 12th would be a possibility for me. Presumably, the kidney he’s removing is so atrophied that it won’t take a big incision!
Keep in mind, kids, even if y’all pick a date that I can’t make, I’ll still be whatever help I can! However, I’ll try as hard as I can to make it, even if it means an overnight near Gettysburg. Keep in mind (for those of you who may know) that it was at Gettysdope, that my youngest daughter, mudgirl, gained her ‘dopername’.
Thank you for volunteering to book the pavilion! Tho’ my hubby is not a Doper, yours is the identification he thought of when we discussed this issue last night, over dinner out. He may not be a Doper in name, but he is definitely a Doper in spirit!
Given my upcoming surgery, I’ll leave the date of Gettysdope up to the other involved Dopers. I certainly don’t expect any of you to wait for me, especially seeing that I won’t even know how long I’ll be restricted until next Tuesday!
We’d be interested in the Saturday of Columbus Day (I don’t get the federal holiday off either, though I could take a vacation day). It’s possible that Typo Knig couldn’t come, as he may have Boy Scout commitments that weekend, but Dweezil, Moon Unit and I should be able to make it.
After my pre-op meeting with my urologist this morning, I’m very doubtful about being able to make it any earlier than early November, and I’m sure that’s late enough in the year to just be begging for trouble! (Not that I expect you to to accommodate my schedule anyway. . .). However, if you do decide on Columbus day weekend and Mr. new is off that weekend, and doesn’t mind the drive, maybe we could make it anyway. I’d just do a lot of sitting around, taking narcotics, smiling and chatting.
I’m hoping my recovery is smooth enough to do that. According to the doc, I’ll be 6-8 weeks before I’m back to “full function”. So, y’all go ahead with your planning, I’ll do what I can to help, and I’m sure everyone will enjoy themselves!
Gettysburg has worked out for the last five years because it’s convenient for everyone from the Philadelphia and Baltimore areas and within acceptable driving distance for everyone from northern Virginia to New York City. kopek, if you want to start a thread organizing a Dopefest in western Pennsylvania, that would be great, but you would be drawing from a different pool of SDMB people (although it would overlap slightly with the people who usually come to Gettysdope).
Not this year but maybe next October for Knoebels Phoenix Phall Phunfest. It’s this odd 300+ vendor craft show, mardi gras party and Halloween festival all happening in a major amusement park – west of Scranton and northeast of Harrisburg. It would have several places to gather and other things to see and do for those not as horribly social. The parking, admission and everything else basically is free - the only costs would be food and rides anyone takes. I’m there every year but I never really looked the place over for something like this - will do this coming one in October.
Just an idea I’m kicking around. May hit Getty to learn the ropes and then take it from there.
I don’t know if Ginger of the North still does that December event at her place (though that’s not PA, it’s northern MD, I think, so not as great for PennaDopers).
Surely the Christmas party at GingerOfTheNorth and Weirddave’s place just north of Baltimore is significantly farther from kopek’s place in western Pennsylvania than Gettydope is.
