Although you may only have experienced criticism of your beauty, as this thread has amply demonstrated, people are routinely criticised for their intelligence as well. These types of criticisms normally take place among junior high school and high school students looking for ways to feel more in control. In the adult world, you are normally only criticised when you act as if you are due special consideration because of your beauty or intelligence.
Beauty fades. It’s not just that as you grow older, you lose the fresh bloom of youth. It’s that the value beauty adds the world is fleeting. This is the stuff of which poetry is made.
And every fair from fair sometime declines
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimmed
Intelligence, OTOH, properly used, can transform the world, make books, and computers, and spacecraft, and even poetry that lives on forever. That’s why devoting your time to your beauty tends to look foolish, because the brief contribution you make by making the world look a little prettier pales in comparison to the contribution you can make by properly cultivating your intelligence.
People get jealous, and petty, and spiteful. They see someone who is smarter than they are, or more beautiful than they are, and they want to hurt that person. The best you can do is to be yourself, and not let a few nasty comments get to you.
Wrong Red Rider…
I found this deeply offensive and extremely rude. However at 5 am this morning I could not form an answer.
It seems to me as Asylum said that you started this thread looking for verification of your theory ie. that that smart people don’t get dismissed out of hand just because they are smart. Thats a plain silly premise, Humans are amazingly flexible in their ability to discriminate. In a society of saints nail biters would be hated.
If you are smart enough to voice your opinions in a non-insulting manner this thread must be written by your evil twin. To dismiss Asylum’s example, just because YOU do not care about it is the height of rudeness.
“Or perhaps I know better than to argue about things of little or know consequence, but I Did start this thread…”
also written by you, this implies that an Americans’ concern for how many states there are in the country is unimportant(and no is misused tsk tsk) After the events of last month that is just plain tacky. Likewise I would never have the balls to tell you that any concern you had about your country’s image was of little or no consequence.
And I suppose it never occurred to you that I might find being referred to as a “Pretty Face” deeply offensive and extremely rude. No, of course not.
Look people - I have no chip, I have no rant, I don’t even care that much - I was curious.
From this it has been determined that I am some sort of beauty obsessed fashion goddess, with her nose out of joint because someone said I placed too much emphasis on my looks. I didn’t say that. I didn’t suggest that. I was curious.
Obviously this whole beauty thing is a big contentious issue for a bunch of people -SOOOOOOO-RU-HE! Anyhow, get over it.
And regarding the number of states, for Christ sake, there is no need to bring Sept. 11 into things - I’ve donated $$, I’ve donated blood, and I have friends and family that not only live in America, but ARE AMERICAN - it’s ignorant and petty to suggest that a flippant comment by me somehow implies that I am insensitive to terrorist issues. That, for the record, I find deeply offensive and rude. I just don’t care that much how many states there are - can any of you honestly say you know all about CANADIAN geography?
The whole point with the bit about how many states there are was an example of how people can be insulted for simply knowing more. I certainly wasn’t trying to imply anyone from another country was deficient for not knowing this. If you care here’s my opinion on that whole deal FWIW. Anywhose this thread’s turned into a pissing match (for which I’ll share the blame) and my blood pressure’s high enough as it is so I’ll just move on.
