Apple Heaven

I’ve died and gone there. I give you the Cripps Pink, more poetically known as the Pink Lady. Tart, crisp, with just the right amount of sweetness. Hmm. I like my real-life ladies like that also!

You’ve finally discovered them? I’ve been enjoying those for the past fifteen years or so.

Currently hooked on Royal Gala, but still admire Pink Lady. Also kind of hooked on Japanese Pears right now too! Mmmmmm.

How would you describe them?

Moi?

Royal Gala are very crunchy, keep really well, more sweet than tart.

Japanese Pears are crunchy but more pear like than apple in texture, it’s sweet and watery in a very refreshing kind of way.

I generally prefer tart, but I’m going to see if I can find these. Crunchy is always good. There is no greater food disappointment than a mealy apple.

Pink.Lady apples are my second favorite. close behind Royal Gala apples. since i’m on a reducing diet I eat more fruit now, so I’m glad for the variety avaialable. For pies though it’s Granny Smith all the way.

There are different qualities of Pink Lady apples, though… there must be. Because when I buy them at Central Market or other frou-frou grocery places, they are large and perfect through-and-through. Every so often, however, my local Walmart stocks them, and they aren’t even in the same ballpark. Not as sweet, not as crisp, and smaller. Hardly worth the premium price they charge for them in comparison to Granny Smith.

I wonder if I could get a Pink Lady apple tree to grow in my backyard?

I like Granny Smith apples. They’re green and tart, supposedly cooking apples but I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so I like em.

Pink lady, not so much.

I had all but given up on apples until recently. My local stores started stocking more than just the usual Granny Smith, and Red and Yellow Delicious a couple of years ago but I had been burned before. About a month ago I caught sight of some beautiful Honey Crisp’s and just had to have one. It was everything I had been missing! Sweet-tart flavor, juicy and super crunchy all the way through. Add some good sharp cheddar and I don’t have to cook dinner.

I’ve been trying different cultivars. The Pink Ladys were okay. The Jazz apples were freaking amazing. Ambrosia aren’t bad, either.

I’m not a fan of crunchy apples. I don’t like them mealy, but not all varieties go mealy when matured past the rock hard crisp stage.

Russet varieties typically soften and become more juicy and aromatic. That’s what I like. I can’t eat an apple if it’s got corners.

Braeburn, Elstar, early Winesap!

Call me boring, but I love a nice cold, crunchy, tart McIntosh.

Oh, I’m a big fan of Granny Smith.

But when I clicked on this OP, I honestly expected to see people raving about iPads and iBooks.

That’s the one! Honey Crisp apples are da bomb! Appley and citrusy, sweet and tart, never mealy. Pink Lady’s may be in second, but the leader is not in question.

I had a Jazz for the first time last week. I don’t remember a thing about it. Maybe I got a bad one.

Ah, but my father’s Red Delicious tree made the most delicious apples I ever tasted, by far. Firm-fleshed, golden apples streaked with red. The flesh near the core was actually translucent, and tasted like cider.

About as far from those styrofoam things in the stores as Earth is from … er, Alpha Centauri. Seriously.

Also, there is a lot to be said for the noble quince.

Yeah, honeycrisps for me, too. As for Japanese pears, if I’m remembering them right, those are pears in the shape of an apple, with the general texture of a crisp apple, but with a washed out pear flavor. The description “watery” above sums up my recollection. Or perhaps I’ve just had bad Japanese pears. If I judged tomatoes based on what I got at the grocery, my opinion wouldn’t be favorable, either.
