Apprentice: 2/19

OMG! Looked at the web site, including the photo gallery.
2 items of note:

  • She’s a pageant contestant, winner, and now “consultant”.
  • She has a husband! As bad as it would be to be on her team, can you imagine being married to her? (Maybe she’s completely different in non-work settings?)

Troy or Amy should win. Wasn’t Amy the one that negotiated the good deal on the golf club - without shaking her ass?

If I had to hire one of them right now, I’d definitely go with Troy. The man is incredibly shrewd, very creative, and a fantastic people-handler. That merchandising thing he pulled off with Kwame when they ran Planet Hollywood–pure marketing genius. He took something that was completely worthless (Kwame’s signature), and used it to get people to buy crap they didn’t even want. And by God, he made 'em enjoy it! These folks were happier than pigs in shit because they thought they were getting something for nothing. What’s more, he did it all without saying or implying anything that wasn’t the absolute truth.

Combine that with the inspired way he handled last week’s negotiations and the end-run he did around Katrina to beat her at her own game, and I’d have to hire him. If nothing else, I’d be afraid to have him working for my competition.

About the Heidi situation. Anyone else think that it just as easily could’ve gone the other way? I mean, Trump looks at her and says, “Wow. You’re quite the trooper! Way to go!”

But what if Trump said something like, “What!?! You find out your mother has stage-1 colon cancer and you don’t RUSH TO HER SIDE??? Are you crazy? I don’t want someone like you working for me…you’re fired!”?

Maybe I’m too cynical but I do wonder if Heidi was calculating which reaction would keep her in good standing with The Don!

WooWoo! I’m Troy too! And yes, I really admire his people-handling skills. At first I thought the way he was cheerleading everyone and doing breathing excerises was kinda lame, but look at how he controlled Sam. When Sam would start spinning out of control, Troy would do some breathing work with him to get him to focus…the hat thing was perfect because not only did it help Sam focus, it made him look a complete fool when he kept wearing it!

And I liked the comment he made about his wife and kids and how he uses his skills to supprt his family, so don’t underestimate him, because he has a powerful motivating force driving him that is greater than ambition. That’s not an exact quote, of course, but that was the essence, in my mind.

Stage one is the least serious of colon cancers, stage four is the most advanced.

Is it terrible to admit that my opinion of Omarosa is considerably diminished by all the photographic evidence of her sucking up to Clinton and Gore?

I think it was pretty clear when he asked her “Does your mom want you to come home or to stay?” that a firing wasn’t imminent. I, for one, totally revised my impression of Trump based upon that exchange. I honestly didn’t think he had it in him to exhibit that kind of caring. Mr. TeaElle is still skeptical, thinking that it’s possible, maybe even likely that the exchange (or Trump’s part of it, at least) was scripted for the cameras, done to boost his caritas with the viewers. I don’t think Trump is opaque enough or talented as an actor enough to have pulled that exchange off if he didn’t honestly want to be sure what was best for Heidi.

And I can’t fault Heidi for her choice at all; she wasn’t going to perform her mother’s surgery, and she’s committed a lot to be in the game. Walking away now wouldn’t serve Heidi at all and it really wouldn’t do her mother any good either, so why do it?

My read on the Katrina situation is this: Katrina, being supremely confident in her superior ability as an experienced real estate professional, chooses the smaller property. Katrina believes that Troy, that weird-talking corn pone guy, couldn’t possibly ever be able to assess real estate accurately; therefore Katrina was 100% sure that Troy would choose the bigger apartment. Knowing that Troy would choose the bigger apartment (and that the smaller one was better, in her mind), she was taken completely off guard when Troy claimed to want the same one she wanted. She knew he really wanted the bigger one, he was just saying he wanted what she wanted because he knew whichever one she chose would be better. In reality, of course, Troy knew which one she wanted and wanted the same one. So Katrina has never realized that Troy actually used his own brain to choose the smaller apartment. That’s why she was so mad and flustered. I’d feel a lot better about her if she would come to her senses and admit she was a jerk.

A medical question: is stage-1 colon cancer the earliest stage, or the most advanced stage? Does it mean a relatively minor procedure can take care of it, or Heidi’s mom is on her last legs.

'Cause, personally, if it was something that just meant more tests needed to be run and probably some surgery in a few weeks, I’d also go ahead and finish what I was doing. And I really love my mom, too.

Stage one is the least serious. Stage 4 is the most serious.

I thought Katrina’s “write what you want on a piece of paper” was kinda silly too, but I’ve seen people do this in negotiating for property. The seller doesn’t want to give away how much he’ll pay, and the buyer doesn’t want you to know what he’ll accept. So both parties write down a figure, exchange it, and then the real negotiating starts.

I may have only seen this in the movies or on TV, but I know I’ve seen it. That’s why Katrina kept yelling that Troy was unethical and dishonest – she thought he knew about this method of negotiating.

If he did know about it, then yeah, he was being sly. But I don’t think he knew about it, that’s why he called it a kid’s game.

This is the only reality show I watch. Trump is a big surprise, I didn’t think I’d like him.

What’s with all the Troys on here? Am I the only Nick?

The funniest part of the Katrina situation is that she didn’t have the brains to discuss her apartment choice out of the range of Troy’s hearing. He was listening in on her phone call, knew what she wanted, and and based his choice on that information. In a way, Troy was relying on Katrina’ expertise when he said, “I want exactly what you want.” It’s Katrina’s own fault she wasn’t more discrete or more clever about her negotiation. Obviously, negotiating isn’t her strong suit, and I think it’ll be her undoing. Don’t expect to see her in the endgame.

Troy walks the line between sleazy and smart. While some admire his tactics in Planet Hollywood and last week (and hey, it worked last week, so good for him), it is entirely possible that Trump, in the end, will ding him for it. In his firings, Trump has weeded out those he thought were unworthy not solely based on the bottom line. He seems to have a nose for the unethical and shady and doesn’t seem to admire it overly. This is not to say that he’s not a great businessman, but I’m not laying my bottom dollar on Troy just yet.
