Yep, I did with a joke. I am, of course, appalled by what happened to the girl, and pleased that the murderer has been jailed for life - and that it will mean life for him.
I consider these feelings so obvious and uncontroversial that there was no need to mention them before. Joking about tragedy doesn’t mean one isn’t appalled by it, but that there’s nothing one can do about it, or say about it that will change anything, so one may as well joke.
Well. This is odd. I think Quartz’s comment about Britdopers was referencing the fact that this case is very well known over here, but not so much elsewhere. Not saying that it’d be A-OK in America.
The search happened when I was staying very near Mold, and I used to date someone from Machynlleth and spent a lot of time there; it’s the kind of town where everyone would think it was OK to let their child play out with friends. Pretty much everyone knew each other, employment is relatively high, the residential roads were quiet, it was surrounded by mountains and had a big hippy contingent, and there was just an air of happy calm over the whole town.
That’s why it’s a bigger story than you might expect - it’s like something from a horror movie.
