Are Atheist, Anti-Gun, Pro-life, libertarians ruining things for everyone?

Here’s a few of my many “labels”

Theist – just not into organized religion

Pro-Gun – a member of the NRA but I don’t own a gun

Pro-Choice – but not a choice I would wish on my worst enemy…but it should be safe

Libertarian – that I am Sam I am

If we (the species of humans) didn’t have a point of view, being a human would be kind of pointless.

Let’s see.

Atheist - Check.

Anti-Gun - Check. I don’t like guns, and I wish no one around me would have any. I’m not in favor of very much gun legislation however.

Pro-Life - Well, I think abortion is one of the grossest things someone can do. If there is anything that should be illegal just because it is gross, that thing is abortion. I don’t think that something should be made illegal just because it is gross. I think the abortion debate will change as 2nd and even first 1st trimester babies are able to be raised outside the womb. As often happens changing technology will force a reevaluation of some of our deepest beliefs. I don’t think this will be a bad thing.

Libertarian - Hardly. Politically I consider myself a realist. Idealism has its place, but in my opinion that place is on the sidelines of political debate.

It has happened. You can do some searches on Deja.com for the alt.atheism group to find at least a few records of conversions - where people who initially posted into that group were theists and later changed their minds. I don’t know of any cases of the reverse. Every convert to theism from atheism that I have ever heard of was not in my mind ever truly an atheist - always they had some sort of vague pagan beliefs that persisted about them (I’m thinking of C.S. Lewis here, but I’ve seen this with multiple people in a book I once read of first-person conversion accounts). However, I am sure that someone, somewhere was actually an atheist for a respectable amount of time and later embraced some ISM.

Nevertheless, for the most part it is just mental masterbation. Everybody does it

I’m a card-carrying MSTie and Esperantist. Does that count?

Son of a gun!

Thats me! ( almost- don’t belong to the NRA but thing most anti-gun proposals come from people living on fantasy island)

Marry Me!-just don’t tell my wife!

There is a middle ground for you two,

SWINGERS!!!

DOH!

  1. What does the title of this thread have to do with your OP?
  2. I believe that it is the nature of humans to give credit to individuals much more than to groups. In Elementary School, they say the Wright brothers invented flight. They don’t mention all the people like Da Vinci that worked on flight beforehand, or all the people that worked on turning the Wright brothers’ glorified kites into useful machines. Nope, just the Wright brothers. End of story. So naturally it’s the mavericks and radicals that get mentioned the most.
  3. Even if all progress were to come from radicals, that wouldn’t mean that all radicals create progress. We shouldn’t just accept any radical idea just because “Hey, it’s progress!”
  4. Why do conservatives oppose radicals? Because that’s the definition of a conservative. If they praised radicals, then they’d be liberals.

Gee techie ( you mind if I give you a pet name?) I’m East Coast, you live in Colorado. Where can we meet? What’s in the middle? KC?, Or maybe St. Louis?

Well humph…tough question…wonder if the Honda’ll make it to St. Louis…that’s the song right? < giggle >
