AAVE (African-American Vernacular English) is a sociolect of English, just like Standard American English is. Although it is sociologically stigmatized, there is no scientific basis behind calling it an inferior dialect of English. It is as capable as expressing complex thoughts and has as complex a sentence structure as Standard American English.
I use the term “sociolect” because it is a variety of English which is distributed sociologically rather than regionally, and because the term “dialect” in unscientific usage refers only to stigmatized dialects. I repeat: Standard American English is no more and no less of a sociolect of English than AAVE.

Agreed. The broken English used by many, but not all, Black people is a Dialect. I stand corrected. I will place it from now on in my personal opinion files alongside that twisted, annoying version of White English used in New Orleans by most ‘natives’. Since I, personally, find both ‘dialects’ annoying, in any further posts concerning dialects I will make a heroic attempt not to allow my personal opinions to show.
I did a limited perusing of the SDMB archives concerning Black posts (or posts concerning Black people) and discovered that in the opinion of most of the respondents, Blacks are not responsible for or have excellent reasons for virtually any form of racist and belligerent attitude toward Whites that they elect to display.
Talk about politically correct. Any White posting any form of negative comment is considered racist, a bigot and a general asshole. Obviously Whites may not discuss any form of Black behavior that might be taken as an insult. Nor can they express any form of compliment that suggests that Blacks are ‘getting better’ – such as the original intent of this thread – because according to the wise contingent of SDMB posters – that hints that they were ‘bad’ to begin with.
Should one insist on posting along these lines, one faces many attacks, including being selected as a topic of a separate, hostile and potentially slanderous post.
Keep the blinders on, people. Ignore the simple facts that no matter what influence of the past affected the Black people, they choose their attitudes towards today’s Whites. Among all of the other nationalities discriminated against here in the States, only the Blacks have something as hateful, twisted and false as the Nation of Islam and only the Blacks seem to carry a revenge attitude down generational lines as the discrimination ends. (The Italians, the Irish, the Chinese and now the Vietnamese did not and have not.)
According to those SDMB posters who care to get involved in such discussions, the Blacks are all justified in such attitudes.
Everyone here is equal, except now it seems that Blacks are more equal. After all, decades ago, they were persecuted and generations ago, they were slaves. (END OF SARCASM).

I agree with almost everything sentinel says in spirit. Sentinel is talking about his area and referring to that area as a good judge of everyone who is black.
I think the best answer to this problem would be to never ever mention the race card unless it applies to physical beauty. Everything else is not the right term.
In one of my classes theres this one kid who used to constantly say “Its because im black” however now everyone says stuff like “Im discriminating against you cause your black” and other such and now hes stopped. Ive found other forms of that… basically the majority wins, always.
I will agree with sentinel on the fact that its taboo to insult black people because in another of my classes my teacher constantly made fun of the short kid (the funniest being when he put up a little sheet of paper “you must be this high to enter” and put it right above her height).

I am quite shocked that you have not heard of the above-mentioned “Christian Identity” groups, since you seem to have such knowledge of the NOI’s “twisted form of religion”.
Christian Identity groups such as the ones named above (and Kingdom Identity, World Church of the Creator, Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, many others) believe that Jesus was actually white and that white people are the lost tribe of Israel. Talk about twisted!
At least I choose not to judge all white people or all Christians based upon the acts and philosophies of these sick fucks.

I was too preoccupied with being appalled by the White based Hate Groups, of which there are over 100 listed and just as wacko as can be and noticing that there are less than 20 Black based hate groups.
NOI was brought to my attention during a discussion of interracial relations on a Black Board, where at least one of the members was part of it. The other Black posters paused in their arguments with me to explain about the NOI and many agreed that they wanted nothing to do with it, BUT most, if not all Whites are still shits and so we continued the rather heated discussion.
It was interesting, until one name calling son of a bitch grew tired of me returning the compliments and reported me to AOL as a TOS violator, which got me a warning, got many of the other posters pissed off at him and instead of violating his ass for what he called me, I left the board.
The board was later closed by AOL.

I still haven’t seen anyone refute this point by Sentinel. Bringing up white hate groups is a nonsequitur, since that doesn’t address Sentinel’s point–that other groups that have historically faced discrimination have by and large let go of their hatred and collective inferiority complexes and gone on to succeed in this society. At least that’s how I read it–am I right, Sentinel?

Over thousands of years, billions have been made into slaves, but, according to history, none have held a grudge like the Black people have. Admittedly, I cannot check to find if these slaves of the past were ever caught in the controversy like the Blacks where the underground railroad was created or they were deliberately kept ignorant, but history does point out that people of various nationalities and color also sold people of their own kind into slavery.
Nor can I determine if any freed slaves of the distant past ever spent as much time trying to ‘discover their roots’ and throwing up their past slavery days into the faces of their previous ‘owners’ like the Blacks have. From what I have learned, it seems unlikely because freed slaves just blended into society, whichever society happened to be chugging along at the time. Very few, if any, demanded to be equal but separate, demanding separate dispensations for their particular race because they had been slaves in the past.
To the best of my knowledge, no other group of freed slaves ever demanded a separate dialect, created ‘ancestral’ holidays to assuage their wounded egos, or ‘created’ a whole series of ‘native’ names to keep in contact with a way of living that was one step above the stone age. This applies to all peoples ever discriminated against, excluding dialects created by learning English from a foreign language. Even there, within a generation, most of the children spoke good English without creating a ‘rolling’ or ‘progressive’ dialect exclusive to their nationality or race.
At one time, all over the South, one could find a major number of fat, mouthy White women, and I mean FAT with thunderous, baggy legs and many, many chins. That changed. One could find mature white men walking around with major pot bellies and ‘bad’ attitudes but that changed also (except for some men in politics). So now the Blacks are starting to change, which, in my opinion, is good because, especially with the women, that indicates they are blending into the general society.
While the men, I’ve noticed, have started cleaning up their physical image, they still like to act ‘bad’ on television and movies while the women have not only stopped that mostly but even changed the very form of the popular rap music, which I personally detest. (Now they are into harmonizing, which, interestingly enough, was what White female groups used to do in the 1940s.)
I mean, these changes can smack you in the face, but if you are WHITE, you cannot mention them without a bunch of psychopathic do-gooders jumping on your ass and calling you a racist. However, the Black people may say whatever they choose concerning Whites with no repercussions.
Now, a NEW chanage has occurred with many Black women, especially young ones, within the last 15 years. Suddenly, they have developed a way of talking through their noses, giving them a high, nasel tone that bugs me. I haven’t figured that one out yet.

Okay, maybe not in this country, but overseas, there’s the IRA. They persist in bringing years of discrimination into the spotlight. They persist in preserving the Gaelic language, once outlawed by the British (Brits just think they talk funny. Sound familiar?). They resist assimilation into British culture, showing a somewhat separatist ideology. They commemorate events which cost them many Irish lives, they hold vigils so that nobody forgets. They sometimes use guns to make their point. This concept is not totally exclusive to blacks in this country, nor the Nation of Islam.
Please make sure to let me know exactly when the discrimination ends, okay? There are definitely some ways in which discrimination is just intensifying day after day. In my mind, some of you are helping to make sure that the discrimination never ends.
There are several reasons why this thread rings my bell. First of all, I am from a racially mixed family. My father is white and, since the 1940’s, has only been involved with black women, including my mother. This is simply what he likes and if I were to ask him, he could probably provide me with an extensive list of beautiful, sexy, publicly visible black women from 40 years back.
I spent time with both sides of the family and there was definitely some shock on both sides when my parents had gotten married, but I don’t remember either side of the family being particularly bitter about the union. We (my sister and I) were treated like members of the family by both sides, not as mistakes or controversies.
My Grandmother lived in the South Bronx and I sometimes spent summers with her. I never got any taunting from the kids, even when I attended an inner-city day camp, about being mixed. I got much more flak from white kids in Colorado when I moved here. Here’s a news flash for you: When someone is mixed, they are considered black by most white people, but considered mulatto by most black people. Why do you think that is? I think it’s because white people (although Sentinel probably doesn’t agree, it has been my experience) have a greater sense of “the other” than black people. During the time I spent in the ghetto setting, I never ONCE heard a “let’s get whitey” or “I hate whitey” type conversation. NEVER. This is a figment of a paranoid white imagination, not supper conversation in every black household. I don’t mean to deny that the sentiment exists, but it is not the norm, as is implied in Sentinel’s “black bulletin board” situation. Maybe you just ran into a very vocal minority, Sentinel. Again, I’d to urge you to qualify people as individuals, not as racial groups.
This is just bollocks. Please show me some statistics on fitness (number of chins, love handles, etc.) that will prove that this is changing. Again, maybe it’s your perspective that has changed. Support this statement please.

Sentinel: you keep mentioning that over the years billions of people have been slaves, but you fail to realize that of those billions, only black americans can name their grandparents or great grand parents who were slaves. Out of all the groups disciminated against in America, only blacks had to deal with over a century of lynchings and segregation. Furthermore, there is a difference in the outlook of people who were voluntary immigrants as opposed to involuntary immigrants. Most of the blacks in America were involuntary immigrants, so their point of view is going to be a hell of a lot different than people who came here willingly, suffered maybe a couple decades of discimintaion, and then, because of theie white skin, fell into the mainstream (honestly now, who can tell a German from a Pole from a WASP?). When you’re black and only 13% of a nation that systematically portrays you as subhuman, you;re earmarked for hatred, and you end up hating back. It doesn’t make it right or good, but unless you’re on thee same side of the fence as they are, you have absolutely no right to criticize something you can’t even begin to understand.
You mention that no other slaves in history spent as much time trying to discover their roots, as if trying to gain some connecting with one’s heritage is a bad thing. Maybe you don’t appreciate the value of one’s culture, and maybe you don’t understand why others don’t necessarily want to assimilate into a culture that has always treated them and their traditions like dirt, but others do understand this. If you thing “freed slaves just blended into society” you really have you head up your ass.
I would hardly call the teaching of B.E.V. to teachers the demanding of a new separate dialect. It already exists, and it’s just too bad that your retarded ass can’t get it through your head that all languages, including the hallowed Stabdard American English, have dialects. And as for “keeping in contact with a way of living that was one step above the stone age” you’re using social theories created by eurocentric white males such as yourself that have been discredited years ago. Just because you don’t understand it doens’t make it wrong or primitive. Just because we Westerners worship technology doens’t make it the only acceptable way of living. For God’s sake man, take an anthropology course or something!
As for music and media images, you haven’t been paying much attention to the past century, have you? There have always been fat white people. There still are. There have always been fat black people. There still are. I will give you the grudging concession that black women’s asses are larger than white women’s because their uteruses (?) have more tilt. Negligible difference. As for music, watch a music special on VH1, PBS, or even MTV, not that MTV does much historical work. For the most part, white music in this century, including those groups you talk about in the 40s, have taken their ideas from “black” music.
