Looking through car magazines at concept cars and previews for 2004-2006 models, it seems to be that we’re heading into another phase of ugly cars, much like the '70’s and early '80’s. Angular, slab-sided bodies with pinhole-sized projection headlamps and gaping rectangular holes for a grill seems to be the trend. I once thought the Pontiac Aztek was an aberration, now it’s looking more like the shape of things to come.
So, what do you think of the latest styling trends? Are cars getting uglier, or do I just have poor taste?
Yeah, I saw one of those new Cadillacs in a parking lot the other day. Looked like that thing was designed entirely with a straight edge and a pencil. It seemed sort of “unfinished” to me.
I like the Pontiac Solstice, though. It is just a concept car right now, but hopefully GM will come to their senses and build it. I’d buy one even if it is a Pontiac.
I dunno, the Chrysler Seabring is a car with smooth lines.
Of course, it’s also a car that is physically uncomfortable for a six-foot man (like myself) to enter and exit, and sitting in the backseat is an exercise in spinal compression.
I have a Toyota Camry, which may be a touch boxy, but at least I have sufficient headroom.
This car to me looks like someone’s idea of what updating the 1960 Studebaker Lark would look like. Just more evidence that Cadillac has has completely lost its way. And the new Damlier-influenced Chryslers do look interesting.
I personally hate the “bubble-butt” look on all the new cars.
All Pontiac Aztek’s should be burned in a massive bonfire.
Oh, and the Chevy Avalache’s as well.
For example, what the hell happened to the Honda Accord? I used to love that car until it got disgustingly ugly. I think the Civic’s are heading down the same road as well.
No offense to FisherQueen, but I cannot stand Echo’s! The ass of the car is highest point, the wheels are about 20x too small for the car, and it’s just way too bulky looking for a tiny car.
I don’t necessarily think they’re getting uglier, but I do think they’re for the most part getting more boring. There are some interesting-looking new cars to be sure, but it’s telling that the top-of-the-line Mercedes Benzes are now virtually indistinguishable from Lexus and Honda. I also can’t tell Lexus from Camry anymore, if I ever could.
The new Ford T-bird bucks this trend - it’s gorgeous. Not the best car or best value, though.
“Bubble butt” look - I call it “ass in the air”. I understand it’s for aerodymanics. They need to try out more solutions.
They all suck, period. We need some retro action like with the Thunderbird or we’ll all be stuck with some seriously butt-ugly cars in the next 5-10 years.
Yes, cars are getting uglier and uglier these days. American car makers are the worst offenders, too. The Aztek, Avalanche, Rendezvous, H2 and CTS are such eyesores!
Ford ought to be ashamed of themselves for what they’ve done to the Jaguar! That X-Type is hideous. Don’t even get me started on the S-Type; it looks like someone’s goosing a Taurus.
