I have found that if you participate in a thread that gets moved to the Pit, and that move is likely to permit flaming or piling on you, then simply abandon the thread immediately and save yourself the headache. Just leave and never open it again.

Is anyone actually still flaming Argent? I think the tenor of the thread had taken a jocular turn.

I guess not, but people were still talking about the propriety of mods moving threads to the Pit just so the mod can start a pile-on.

Honest question: I’d like to know if there is precedent for an OP asking to have their thread closed and being told no. I’ve been around here for awhile, as you can see, and I have never seen this happen. Quite the opposite, I’ve seen plenty of instances of the OP vaguely suggesting a thread might be better off closed, then changing his/her mind and continuing with the discussion, and a mod comes along and locks it anyway.

Happens fairly often in GQ too. (Actually, the poster may not be told “no” directly, but the thread is allowed to stay open despite the request.) We don’t necessarily close a thread just because a poster doesn’t like the responses it’s getting.

I’ve noticed that when an OP requests a thread be closed, it is almost always granted if the discussion has basically been had already (in that thread). I haven’t noticed people getting their threads closed because they made an error in judgement and wanted to take it back. Sort of a “laid is played” rule, if you will.

I agree that short guys are more dickish (and not in a good way) than taller guys. I have yet to meet a short doctor who didn’t have a god complex or even a short businessman, ditto. I believe it’s called overcompensating.
But when I can look eye to eye with you and you swear you’re 5’10 and I know I’m 5’7", I’m going to think you’re an insecure dick. Just sayin’.

So come on. No, this thread didn’t have to be moved. And no, it certainly didn’t have to remain open for a Pit-type pile on if its OP didn’t intend for it to be that sort of a thread. Don’t act if if the SDMB has actual rules that the mods actually consistently follow, and use that fabrication as a justification.

You can’t pretend that we have anything other than a makebelieve rule that says ascribing ‘negative personality traits’ to people belongs in the Pit, when GD mods routinely allow overt flaming.

A mod, subjectively, felt like moving this thread. So he did. There is no actual rule against flaming, let alone talking about “negative personality traits”, and you shouldn’t pretend that there is.
A mod wanted to do something, a mod did it.
That’s all there is to it.

Oh, and as far as the OP is concerned, I have to second whoever said that the real assholes I’ve run into have tended to be the short skinny guys. Serious Little Man’s Disease going on. Most tall skinny guys I’ve met have been OK, although the basketball players could be a little cocky when they wanted to.

There’s absolutely precedent for not closing threads upon request. Happens all the time in the Pit. Threads that have gone off the rails get closed, but the mods usually don’t lock threads to protect somebody from the fallout of their own remarks.

As far as modding and posting in the same thread goes… we try not to. Sometimes you’re participating in a thread and somebody steps over the line and you have to put the mod hat on, and it can’t be avoided.

That said, I think a situation like this calls for a paraphrase of Churchill:

“Today I am short, tomorrow I may be tall. Argent Towers will still be a twit.”

At first, I thought you were joking and riffing on the ‘40 year old virgin’ movie. I’d never checked out his birth date in his user info. Up until now, I’ve always thought that he was either an old HS student or a college freshman/sophomore who still had a lot of rage left over from his days in public school.
