I’ve always been fond of the Coca Cola polar bears. They were slow-moving, gentle, and well… sweet. Also I don’t recall a lot of talking in those commercials.
There’s one that I haven’t seen in many years, and I’m not even sure it aired all over the country. It was for Whataburger. (Are there Whataburgers outside of Texas- I really don’t know.)
This commercial had no dialogue at all (maybe that’s the KEY to a good commercial, eh?). It showed a middle-aged cowboy in a sheepskin jacket and Stetson riding through a snowy landscape at dusk. Then in the middle of a clearing he comes upon about a 25-foot pine tree decorated with lights. He stops to look at it. That’s it.
There was probably some music in the background, but it must have been very subtle, as I can’t remember it. I believe at the very end the word “Whataburger” appeared on the screen, and possibly “Seasons Greetings” or something.
I get goosebumps just remembering this. The beginning of it was so gentle that it always engaged my attention and it was always a lovely surprise when he rides into the clearing and sees that tree.
The latest Christmas Coke commercial, with Santa and the snow globe. They play it on Hulu shows a lot.
I liked it enough the first few times to show my little girl, which was a mistake because now every few hours she wants mommy to play the “Santa show”. Still, as commercials go, it’s bearable.
Yeah, that one. Which I knew it was even before I clicked the link, but clicked the link anyway. Where’s the Kleenex?
There’s another one, not in the heartwarming genre, which leaves me giggling like a schoolgirl every time I see it. It’s for some phone company (I don’t remember which one, so it’s obviously a failure as an actual ad) with this little orange (or maybe he’s pink?) Ugly Doll looking dude. When the QWERTY keyboard pops out, he faints. He’s just so CUTE! And something about his excited/overwhelmed little sound, rising to a squeak right before he passes out, just tickles my funnybone.
I like the Target Toy Jackpot commercial - the kids look like they’re having a genuine ball, and there’s something endearing about the Zhu Zhu trundling along backwards. I also really like You’ll Never Find My Christmas - it shows all I love best about Christmas, that pleasurable thrill of fooling your loved ones to give them a great surprise. I downloaded both those songs and added them to my Christmas mix, along with Mrs. Claus Ain’t Got Nothin’ On Me, which has an OK commercial, but I really like the song.
Yep. That’s the one I was gonna mention, but I couldn’t remember what the ad was for. Babeeeeeez! Sleeping!
I’m also liking the one for Best Buy – the one where the snowman’s head falls off. And the one mentioned by WhyNot – that one is cute, and the one where one of the critters drags his foot, like he’s being shy.
This one, with a catchy song and adorable guy, keeps being taken down by the idiots at the company it’s advertising, who for some reason don’t like people watching their advertising, so I’m not going to help the company by listing the product, but I really like this commercial.
I’ve never seen it anywhere but being played in movie theaters, where I saw it for several years. I haven’t seen it this year even though I’ve been to the same theaters, and I miss it. Every single thing about it is as alien to me as a science fiction movie, but I still love it.
