Are there any Duffy fans here?

I just watched*** An Education***, and as the end credits rolled I heard this song come on the soundtrack. Turns out it was by some chick called Duffy? I’ve been kinda out of it lately, music-wise, but a little googling indicated that she’s currently some kind of hot property. Anyway, what prompted me to start this thread is that when I heard the song my first thought was “OMG that’s Carmel! Who else but me and Equipoise has ever heard of Carmel?”

So, as a treat for any Duffy fans here, here’s a taste of the vacuum that Duffy did not spring from: she stands on the shoulders of at least one giant.

(Note: Carmel recorded mostly in the 80s, and if there is any justice the producers who ruined her tracks with too much 80s production are all rotting in early graves. Try to listen beyond the 80s-ness to one of the great voices I know of. And thanks as always to Equipoise for telling me about Carmel in the first place.)

You’re welcome. Thank you for the links! It’s never occurred to me to look and see if Carmel had any videos.

If people only listen to one, and please do, it should be this one. It’s a throwback to a '50’s sensibility and her voice is mesmerizing.

Btw, Duffy’s a hot property for a very good reason, her voice, her music, and her incredible backgroud are all worth of attention, and I was delighted to see her featured in An Education*. I’m generally into more original artists, but there’s nothing wrong with original retro done well, and Duffy does it extremely well.

“Stepping Stone”

“Warwick Avenue”

“Rockferry”

“Mercy”

  • and let’s not forget the wonderful Beth Rowley, who was the singer in the restaurant scene!

I remember Carmel well.

I much prefer her to Duffy, who I think is over rated frankly.

He played a great Bobby Ewing.

I’ve loved what I’ve heard. Very Dusty Springfield / Lulu…

Did you get a chance to hear any of the tracks linked in the OP?
