I know segregation is illegal for any school that receives public funding. What I’m wondering about here is private universities. There are plenty of black colleges, right? Are there any exclusively white colleges?
Also, are black colleges strictly black or just predominantly black out of tradition? That is, can a white person get into a black college if he really wants to?
Colleges and universities such as Howard University are known as “traditionally black colleges”. They generally do not reject applications from caucsaians, asians or latinos. As you can see here 14% of Howard U students are not African American.
I’m sure you’d find similar statisics for other major traditionally black universities.
Gypsy: Tom, I don’t get you. Tom Servo: Nobody does. I’m the wind, baby.
That’s strange. Of the 14%, 2% are Caucasian, 2% Asian, 1% Latino, 1% Native American, and 10% “Other.” Would somebody care to venture a guess on who exactly “other” would refer to. Between those 5, you’ve pretty much got it all covered, haven’t you ?
“Other” includes multiracial students who don’t want to label themselves with strictly one racial classification. This is a relatively new phenomenon and most forms, whether from public or private organizations, don’t include a “mixed race” category.
And in answer to the original post, most if not all historically African-American schools do accept white applicants.
Saw a piece on some TV news magazine show a few months back about big scholarships available to non-black students in pre-dominantly black colleges trying to be more diverse. Sorry, can’t remember the show - 60 minutes, 20-20 or Dateline.
Had this question been asked forty years ago, I think you would have little trouble obtaining an answer–or dozens of them. I suspect that now any school that strictly adhered to a homogenous student makeup of any sort would find it difficult to gain acceptance in the academic community. That whole accreditation thing-a-ma-bob.
I’m a WASP (well, minus the P now). I lived and worked in North Carolina for 5 years or so, and had a number of black friends. One of them talked me into taking a class with her at NC Central University, a traditionally black school.
The class: Black Studies.
And oh boy, was I the only pink person there. I got a load of wierd looks. The instructor did a major doubletake the first day of class, and periodically throught the semester would just look up at me and chuckle, shaking his head.
I had a blast, though, and I consider it in many ways the most valuable college class I ever took.
And there are a number of schools that are predominantly white simply because not many blacks or other minorities would be caught dead there. Bob Jones U, BYU, many other religious schools . . .
Oddly enough, I think BYU in Hawaii (on Ouahu) is a strange phenomenon…a large number of the students are of Polynisian decent. Ahhh, the “Christians” - always trying to convert my brown and yellow brothers and sisters
