In my 28 years of experience and having worked at around 10 different clinics through the years I have never seen such a thing, unless you count those old-fashioned metal tipped glass rods also known as mercury thermometers. But usually a q-tip works just fine. You don’t want to be using something that could potentially shatter and be very, very bad on a squirmy, horny queen.
As for pet sex toys, I had a friend that had a dachshund and everything in the world was his sex toy. You quickly learned not to lie down on the floor at her house.
I’ve had several cats go into heat before I could get them to the vet. This means I found a friendly stray on Thursday, made an appointment for the next week and cat went into heat on Friday. Bonus points if it was a long weekend. I’ve heard of the Q-tip solution, but I just used lots of beer, wine or whatever else I could pour down my throat.
A friend has a neutored dog who humps a throwrug. Nobody walks on it, its belongs to the dog for his private enjoyment. That’s as close to animal sex toys as I want to know about.
Can rabbits and cats not be given hormone injections like female ferrets? (Who not only need to have sex to ovulate, but can literally die if they go into heat and don’t mate, because their estrogen levels just keep rising and rising…)
WhyNot, most female ferrets are spayed, exactly to prevent that for happening. I have not heard usually of using hormone injections to alter that. Estrogen is a bone marrow suppressor, which means the animals become anemic, with low platelets (prone to bleeding), and without white blood cells to fight infections. Bad combination that leads to bleeding.
Now, if you’re talking of using injections to treat a (somewhat similar) hormonal disease, then yes, that can occur. Adrenal gland tumors in ferrets (for some quirk of ferrets) leads to production of excess estrogen… so the above scenario occurs even if the animal is spayed.
In the case of cats, I know that some sex hormones (basically birth control) have been linked to mammary tumors.
Our dog was an official slut (breeder) for guide dogs, and was brought up there to be bred whenever she went into heat. If any toys were involved I never heard of them, but she didn’t need them, I suppose.
And some dogs are just horny. Our pet dog was definitely out of the breeding business, but he humped his bed every time we even thought about sex. He stayed away from people, at least.
Ah, yes. In most of the United States, the majority of ferrets are sterilized by the time they’re put on the pet market.
I point out, though, that some of the anecdotes mentioned here (and some behavior that I’ve seen) occurs in animals (mainly dogs) that have already been sterilized, and do not have their primary sex hormone producing organs.
I had the same question, im sure it has crossed the minds of anyone who breeds animals, and anyone whoo cares for them. Our male cat goes into fits every night around midnight, and usualy takes his frustration out on our female neutered cat if he gets away with it. this is distressing for her, so we have to separate them. I was thinking perhaps a stuffed anima sprayed with pheremones may help. He is cearly distresssed, and a sex toy for him is surely a thoughtful idea, so to your critics on here, they do not have hearts, or empathy it seems.
Sure do. It’s called a “blanket” and anytime it’s hanging off the edge of my couch, my dog starts humping it. He just can’t get enough of that damn thing. AND he’s neutered. Go figger.
Just what I came in to say. we’ve had both dogs and cats using the blanket.
I knew someone who used to stimulate his (female) cat with a pencil. the less you dwell on this, the better.
