I’ve noticed lately that my sensitivity is ultra-high about the stupidest things. I find that if I see a commercial with only white actors, I secretly think that there must be some racism. If I see a commercial with a wide variety of ethnicities, I think that it’s stupid and contrived. I’m afraid to admit that I think Britney Spears is hot because of the possible backlash.
I also find that I have opinions about the stupidest things. I think TV shows and movies are idiotic for no good reason.I find myself thinking that this Afghan thing is taking far too long, even though the logical side of me sees that those in the Armed Forces know the situation far better than I.
In my local newspaper, everyday it seems, someone is offended at something new. I’ve seen adults attacking teenagers for admitting that they would be willing to give up a few personal liberties in order to weed out terrorists. I’ve seen other people take the First Amendment in vain (the drafters didn’t mean to protect all speech, you know).
I’m not alone in my hyper-sensitivity. A lot of Pit rants lately are about, in my opinion, pretty lame things. I don’t mean to attack those who posted those threads, but I find a lot of Pit threads to be whining for no good reason.
I’ve seen the Olsen twins attacked. Not only attacked, but people calling for their heads on poles. There’s a thread about those who say “God Bless America.” I see a lot of threads condemning commercials, movies, TV, even football announcers. There’s even a thread about the quality of Nicklodean. I very much want to find these threads moronic, though inside I find myself cheering on those who write the OP’s.
But really, isn’t ranting about these sort of things kind of pathetic? I believe in letting off steam. I believe in ranting just to rant. But, come on. If everyone who posts a pit thread about Old Navy commercials is genuinely disturbed by them… well… that’s just sad.
I believe we should all lighten up. Let’s have a day where we just live and let live. Let’s not scrutinize things far more than they were meant to be scrutinized. Let’s realize that most media is meant for our entertainment, and is not to be taken too seriously. Let’s know in our hearts that the president (though I didn’t vote for him) probably knows more about Afghanistan than we do. And let’s drop this whole Kessel run/Parsecs thing.
I know many others who feel the way that I do. Many blame the political correctness movement. I, for one, embrace all things PC. PC was meant to increase our awareness of different points of view, to realize that others have different outlooks that are as equally valid as our own. Unfortunately, PC has seemed to devolve into a new sort of finger-pointing. Shake off that PC stereotype. Regain some tolerance, and embrace all things different, which was the original focus of the PC movement.
Realize that most people are good. I had a professor who once said that 90% of everyone is good, and the remaining 10% will try to screw you. Realize that these are damned good odds.
And let’s save our rants for things genuinely worth ranting about, instead of any old thing that rubs us wrong.
Let’s all agree to lighten up. After writing this, I’ll volunteer to be first.
Peace, y’all. Forgive me my drunken ramblings. And my liberal use of the comma.
