Are you a ‘flexitarian?’
Meat-eating vegetarians transform the movement
Hey, there’s a name for it! If it were up to me, I’d eat a whole lot less meat than I do at the moment, but I’m not usually the cook, you see, so I don’t complain. I came up with the term semivegetarian for it, but I don’t really care what it’s called, it’s just neat that I’m not alone.
I guess I fall into the category. Business travel and some social obligations make it almost impossible to remain 100% vegetarian.
You know, I know this isn’t the pit, so I won’t get too pissy, but why is it that people need to fall into ‘categories’?
I mean, vegetarian means ‘one who doesn’t eat meat’ (I know there is some debate about this definition). I don’t know a single person who is truly a carnivore, so it seems to me that either you’re a vegetarian, or you’re not, as far as eats no meat/eats meat goes. If I have a meal with no meat, I’m not ‘eating vegetarian’, I’m just not eating meat. At least, that’s how I see it.
I don’t think of it as “eating vegetarian,” just as eating a vegetarian meal. I don’t think I could completely give up meat ever. Yum. But I have had some veggie meals to DIE for.
I’m about as close to a carnivore as anyone I know. I hate vegetables and usually avoid them (except on stuff like party trays, although I don’t actively seek them out either), I’m a meat/cheese/bread eater, and I have an inexplicable passion for all kinds of raw meat. Yes, I said raw. Chicken, bacon, all kinds of beef, veal, you name it and I’ll eat it. I can’t quite explain it, but I think meat tastes better raw.
