Are you smart? We need you

This is essentially a plug for a new project of mine, but since its goals are identical to SD’s (fighting ignorance) I figured I’d make my case here.

Stupid people abound. Stupid people also like to spread information about their stupidness that is wrong. These people include fundamentalists, pseudoscientists, cultists, bigots, etc.

One of the most disturbing and offensive examples is God Hates Fags.

So my friend Tim and I decided to do our bit to help out humanity and we started God Hates Fundies. Though the name is a parody, our site is going to (hopefully) contain numerous research articles debunking information spread by anti-gay, anti-race, anti-other-religion, bigots, pseudoscientists, cult-leaders, and other whackjobs. An example is the very first Myth of the Week Column, written by me, which addresses homosexuality.

We need people to contribute to the site. If you like to do research and write and fight ignorance, we want you. Please check the site out and give us your thoughts. We need people to write Myths of the Week, more in-depth Debunking articles, and other miscellany. We’ll also publish just about anything under Opinion, from any side, as long as it’s well researched and well written.

Take a look at out launch press release.

So far this project has been about three days from conception to what’s there now. Not all of it works, there are many features we want to add, etc. But our first priority is getting content up there.

Thanks and enjoy.

PS: If you write for us, we’ll give you a free POP3 email account! Wahoo![/sub]

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: In exchange for writing for us, you will get: Fame, noteriety, and pride.

I like the idea, freido. However, with my school schedule, my internship, working full time and trying to sleep, I don’t know when I’ll have time to come up with anything. But I will try. I just wanted to let you know I think your idea is a good one.

What’s the point of having a title that’s just as offensive as the title of the groups that you’re replying to?

Hmm. What a name. godhatesfags.com. Brilliant. Thsi si the sort of profound counteroensive that makes me think sometimes that the battle against ignorance cannot be won. It disgusts me.

http://www.godhatesfundies.com seems to be a wonderful weapon. Hope is restored. I think you’ve got the right idea here, and I’d like to do whatever I can to help. I have no idea where to start, so I think that you will have to get me started wherever you want me, but I think you have a good answer to the horrifying (and frankly dangerous) ignorance before us.
I am also going to join the gay-straight alliance at my school (UNC Greensboro). That doesn’t have much bearing here, but it’s nice to present some sort of credentials :D.
Let me know anything I can do to help you. Reading what you have written thus far, I think it would be a good idea to check up on those sources cited by godhatesfags.com (although I’m sure you’ve thought of this already). As you’ve said, it’s not hard to bend words to create statistics to prove anything you want. Also, Wendell’s got a good point. Your web address, although clever, negates everything else you have already said about arrgument. You want to stick to logic and clear thought, and parody is sarcasm, which is an emotion-based argument, from which you are trying to stray. It’s tempting to mock ignorance (cuz dammit, that’s what it’s for!) but I think it detracts from the seriousness of your cause.
But please, let me know what I can do for you.

It’s a joke. It’s meant to subtely display the level of stupidity perpetrated by some groups. Admittedly, it’s a risky title, but I think it’s damn funny.

Friedo, I cracked up when I clicked on the link to your plagiarist. Very funny, but only those of us who know what he did will get it…

It’s about as subtle as a rock to the side of the head.

I like the idea of this kind of site, because one bigoted, hate-filled site of any kind is one too many, and your site is a step in the right direction, as is this one.

The name may be a red flag, but it may also draw fundamental non-Christian Christians to look at it, and see how some other people view them.

God hates fags…God hates fundies…

Man, I hate it when people speak for God. And you know what? So does he.

I’m wondering… isn’t it possible to be smart and just happen to be religiously fundamental? What’s with the stereotype that “fundies” are all brain dead rednecks?

Still, the site is a nice idea. I think the URL will get old quick. It’ll probably also limit your viewership.

Yes, of course it’s possible. It’s the difference between “fundamentalist” and “fundie.”

Let me make it clear that in addition to writing serious content the site is also supposed to be somewhat amusing. That’s why the title is a joke.

You know, it’s about time that someone like you stood up against the ignorant masses!

My favourite is when Christians somehow get it in their head the God, Jesus, and the Bible are anti-gay. Correct me if I’m wrong (which I’m not) but doesn’t the Bible say (a lot) the God and Jesu love ALL! No matter what! Yes, I believe it does. In fact, on of the ten commandments is love thy neighbour. Not, love thy STRAIGHT neighbour.

Damn them all.

(yes, I am Christian as well, (Catholic to boot.))

I had a look at the page, I like it. I’d be interested in writing a couple of articles for it if that’s ok. Would it be alright to e-mail the site with what I come up with?

Let me know.

Gomez

Absolutely! Just send everything to submit@godhatesfundies.com.

So “fundamentalists” are fine with you, and you use the word “fundies” for the bad ones?

Seems I’ve heard similar distinctions made to justify the use of other offensive terms. Not by people I admire.

Well, I’ll correct you. You are wrong. Love thy neighbor is in Lev. 19:18; it is not one of the Ten Commandments. And yes, the Bible does say that God and Jesus love everyone. It also says that God hates sinners (Ps. 5:5), that God hated Esau (Mal. 1:3), and that homosexuals will not go to Heaven (1 Cor. 6:9). This is why people are able to read the Bible and get vastly different conceptions of God and his rules based upon what passages they accept and which they ignore.

I have a hunch that very, very few people actually have their morality based in religion. Rather, they decide what is moral/immoral based upon their own common sense, prejudices, etc. and then look for appropriate passages from their particular holy text to justify their beliefs.

However, I applaud the launch of this website. Ignorant cretins like Fred Phelps need all the debunking we can provide.

friedo, I’ll keep your site on my favorites lists. It really should prove to be amusing. Fred Phelps is such an evil old pervert . He’s right here in my home town of Topeka and I even got mentioned once in a fax of his(it was a long time ago.) I’ve been part of counter-demonstrating against him, and the only time in my life I have been tempted to violence was when his group mugged our minister, coming right onto church grounds to do it to.

May I suggest if you want fodder for really good responses that you make your site known to him?

:::::chuckling:::::

Well, I got it…

I’d just as soon assume that “God hates” is an oxymoron.

In addition, let’s remember a few things about the Bible:

1)God didn’t write it. However, he did create homosexuals.

2)Old Testament scriptures are full of direct quotes from the big dude upstairs. (Of course you can take these for what they’re worth, I personally believe there is such a thing as Christian mythology.) Exceptions are Psalms, which were written as devotions by King Solomon I believe, and say stuff like “Thou Hatest,” Speaking for God, the same human assumption that is causing so much grief among us today. I can do that!

God, you hate all Skynard fans.

There, I just sent millions of americans to hell. I’m a powerful guy. The same thing goes for Saint Paul, who wrote Corinthians. Malachi quotes the Dude directly. Of course, translation obscures much. The original Aramaic texts of the Gospels never referred to Mary as a virgin, for example.
Not that I need to defend any of this to you, I see that Opus1 was not atteacking, but making a very valid point which was that flimsy and ambiguous quotes from the Bible give ignoramuses such as our Westboro pals all kinds of seemingly meaningful ammunition, which is unfortunate. But oh well. We’ve got plenty of our own. i’m going to bed.
(by the way I checked all these quotes out in the King James Bible online which i found by asking Jeeves, in case you’re interested. http://www.ask.com )
