I only know what my sister told me about it (she had several friends in the engineering faculty). She said that the ring is supposed to be made from the remains of a bridge that collapsed, and it’s a reminder of the responsibility that comes with the engineering profession.
She graduated from what used to be called the Home Ec faculty, and always jokes that her ring came from the remains of a ruined cookie sheet.
I love rings, but I’m picky about them. The can only be sterling silver, and if they have stones, I prefer moonstone and garnet.
I wore my highschool ring for a long time but took it off for good in college, because I thought I’d get a college ring-- never did, though; for some reason getting a ring at my college wasn’t a major tradition.
Right now the only one I wear constantly is a “spinner” my boyfriend got me at a street fair. I play with it all the time-- it’s got sort of a center track that spins around an outer track, and the center has this cool pattern on it. That’s on the ring finger of my right hand; on my left hand I alternate a couple of favorites from my collection: a handmade moonstone one from the Renaissance Faire and a goddess/moonstone one my mom gave me, a tiny ring-of-fairies, stuff like that.
I actually adore silver jewelry and own a couple of dozen silver rings which I acquired during my travels to and fro.
I used to wear them in ever changing combinations but I got a job in a bar where the owner didn’t like that so I fell out of the habit. Now I work for a snooty caterer with the same no jewelery policy.
It’s kind of freeing but I know one day I’ll go back.
