Quick question, I know I have seen a lot of folks here play Arma 3. It’s on sale on Steam now, and online resources are so variable I thought I’d ask here.
I don’t really like playing MMP battles for various reasons. What I’d like to do is play campaign or challenge scenarios with only select people. I also am only OK at setting up servers, and we are on the same household LAN.
Can we play this easily, or should I give the sale a pass?
Arma3 is huge fun, but to some extent you get out of it what you put into it. It takes work to find cool mods and set everything up. There is no other game like it for combined arms sandbox play though. It’s equal parts frustrating and awesome.
Second the recommendation for the Antistasi mission. Also recommend Pilgrimage, Dynamic Universal War System, and the King of the Hill multiplayer mode. Each of these missions/modes is almost like a different game.
Arma 3 is very easy to set up either as a listen server or a dedicated server. For a listen server IIRC you just start a new Multiplayer game with the parameters you want, give out your external IP, and players can connect directly your IP. You will probably need to open ports in your router.
For most missions you can freely mix human players and AI players in whatever ratio you want. You can command AI, they tend to make good gunners in tanks and technicals.
I always have problems setting up ports on my router. It works sometimes, other times it doesn’t. I follow tutorials and all that crap, but it’s about 25/75 works or not.
Anyway, I’m going to give it a shot! Looks like the kind of game you can get lost in for a long time.
Based on my experience, I found that the trick was to have a techie son born about 30 years ago, bring him up playing video games and building up a good relationship and then, presto! You get invited to play with him and a few of his friends every Thursday night. (Prepare to be humiliated for the first year or so until you get good at Arma, it’s a hard, unforgiving game, but fun with a good core group.)
Bonus, raise a daughter a couple of years younger who doesn’t play very often, asks questions like, “how do I crouch again?” and somehow manages to make us all look like newbies with Nerf guns when we check our kill counts at the end…
