I sincerely hope Arturo gets a chance to read them. I feel very much the same way. There is some great stuff here - great dialogue, great debate - but you do have to search for it. Ignore the idiots (yeah, SlipMahoneyshithead, I’m talking about you again) and keep an open mind. There are some great people here - people willing to fight for their beliefs and argue their positions in a sane, intelligent and civilized manner.
I sympathize with your feelings, Arturo, but I urge you to stay and continue to participate in thoughful debate. Just ignore some of the small-minded assholes who lurk about leaving stupid, snide comments to make themselves feel better (Hello, Slip Mahoney).

To the first, no, not offhand. But I’ve seen several racists about, and for the most part if they’ve been rational and reasonable, it is their arguemnts that are challenged.
To the second, “violent” was not the appropriate word to use, I think. Apologies. I would, however, mention our der FoG and Wildest Bill among those who consider gays to be only borderline humans.
But, neither is here or there, and both are my opinions only, to be taken with a liberal dusting of salt. The important question is:
:shrug: I don’t know, Lib. Me, I try to abide dissent. I think many here do, and I think you do as well. So if you mean “we” as in you and me, the answer is that we that we can and do abide dissenters.
If you mean “we” as in the loose collection of individuals who post here, I don’t know. A sense of ownership, an innate pack mentality, whatever. But there again, I think that enough people either abstain from attack of the different or oppose such attacks that “we” in this case is actually “that group that attacks.”
If you mean “we” to be the administration of the Board, then I think dissent is well abided. Being a jerk is not. I suspect we’ll have to differ on this, but I did not and do not see Lynn’s closing of Arturo’s thread to be the stifling of his dissent. Nor (IIRC, and it’s possible I do not) was he accused of trolling or threatened in any way. The line in question, it seems, was “let it serve as an example.” Obviously, this has been interpreted by Arturo as an attack. I don’t think it was.
Too, this thread has not been closed–and if there were an anti-Arturo pogron in the works, I rather think it would have been by now.

While I disagree with most of what Arturo said, he did make one valid point.
Arturo, among whatever else he might be, is a newbie, and posting in the wrong forum should be forgiven for the first time by having the thread moved rather than locked. I understand completely why Lynn would lock it, as it dealt with a very sensitive subject but I believe it should not have been locked because it was posted in the wrong forum (if indeed that is the reason).
N.B.: Please do not take this as mod-bashing. It isn’t. Though Lynn is darn near to being a goddess, she is still human and has to make difficult calls. If she stands by the assertion that it shuold have been locked for that reason, then so be it.

It looks like I made a wrong turn somewhere. I see threads denouncing the board, all prettified in nice language, but the meaning is clear: we’re ignorant, Cecil’s lost his edge, the mods are trigger happy, there’s favouritism, pile-ons and cliques, banality and other crimes against humanity.
So I disagree, dressed in plain language, befitting the normal attire in the pit, and I’m a shithead and given five dollars to buy a clue.

If I ever decide not to post here anymore, I hope to God I have the willpower to just go away without any fuss. It’s not like the 17K+ members of this board hang on every word each person posts, anyway.
Why do threads like this have to be in the pit? Why cant legit concerns about mods or whatever be dealt with in ATMB? The mentality in the pit is one of: pile-on-dont-let-the-door-hitcha-gotta-swear-cuz-its-the-pit-ness.

I think his letter in ATMB was sincere, why cant we give creedence to his opinions? Why cant we even discuss the possibility of mob mentality?

kellibelli, I’m piling on. Not on you, but with you. Yes, Arturo might be a little on the overboard side, but he does bring up some good points. Valid points. True points. Unfortunately, when someone new says anything contrary, they are an ass. I share many of the same opinions that he does, which is why I generally have stopped going into certain areas and opening certain threads. The hypocrisy at times can be overwhelming. A lot people here do actually attempt to fight ignorance. There are also lot of people who simply use it to feed egos or be the person they wish they actually were. Is it required to jump on someone’s ass just because they actually say it? With all the intelligence that supposedly exists in these boards, sometimes it looks an awful lot like an elementary schoolyard, this particular thread included. “He dissed us…let’s get him!!!”
If you fall into the categories that Arturo mentioned, maybe you can learn from it. If you don’t, can you honestly say that a lot of his points are not true, and that many others do not? If so, and you actually believe that everything he said was a crock, perhaps you should be on the other side of the Fight for Ignorance. How he said it may be a bit abrasive and long winded, and a few points are a little “out there”. And although the “all inclusive” is rather harsh, some of what he said is not far off of the mark. If your answers here would be identical in their heat if the same words were written by some of the more beloved long timers with post counts in the thousands, pound away. But ask yourselves honestly if they would be. If the tone of the words would be even slightly different, then his point is proven.
But… I’m a newbie as well, and similarly chock full of shit and stupidity.
Perhaps simply prohibiting posts which are critical of the SDMB is the way to go? Please don’t misinterpret this as sarcasm. I am quite serious. The only thing that seems to come of these types of posts is a flare up of one side saying “this was a reasonable post/poster and should not have been closed/banned” versus the other side saying “don’t like it? leave”. I see some good arguments from the former but ultimately have to agree with the latter.
If I had a problem to discuss with the Mods/Admins I would do it via email. I certainly would never post a complaint about the board or a Mod or Admin in the Pit. It just seems like you are asking for it. Which is maybe the intent?
