I have watched a few Here Come The Mummies videos. As I watched this one:
I realized the whole production reminded me of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic style of stage show. I cannot be the first one to notice this, and if this runs true to history, many musical Dopers will inform me the two groups have nothing in common in any manner whatsoever except they both use electronic instruments.
Does anyone else see a similarity? It is too much to hope they have musicians in common (and even if they did…) And of course favorite clips from either group will be welcome, especially ones appropriate for the Halloween season.
Wow, I have never heard of Here Come The Mummies until now. Are they fairly unknown, or did I have a hole in my pop culture knowledge?
To answer your question, sure there’s a similarity to PF. They’re both R&B / Funk bands that put on a colorful spectacle of a live show. How intentional the similarity is, is hard to say, but HCTM seems more like a parody of a thing than an original thing on its own. If I was to guess their influences, I’d probably guess PF with just a dash of Blue Man Group thrown in.
I just learned about Here Come The Mummies a few weeks ago by a friend who saw them in concert. The way he explained it, the Mummies are a supergroup made up of musicians from a bunch of different bands so they are all on different contracts to different music labels and management so the gimmick is to prevent them from having a recognizable identity on stage.
They were first recommended to me by someone involved in supervising my kid who was REALLY enthusiastic about them. He tried showing me some videos on his phone when other matters were more pressing and I dismissed them as a novelty band.
Then about a year ago as Halloween approached someone on this board (perhaps you QuickSilver) linked to them and I thought they were very good. I might have even believed the elaborate costuming was just for a Halloween show at first. I eventually became fan, although one who tends to binge then starve; I have been viewing many of their videos lately- but before that I had not listened to them for a couple of months, maybe longer. I can believe they might have other fame, they seem to be very good musicians who are just having fun to me.
