Ask the BLACK WOMAN!!!!! nothing is too ignorant......i hope.......

That’s a PERFECT example of the black acting white thing…kinda. he’s almost a modern day Amos & Andy. Everytime i see him on that show, i just want to throw my slipper at him. He acts very buffonish. Everytime i see him, he’s rapping or dancing or something. He’s not even funny!
I’m too sure of what you mean about the Bill Cosby thing.

Jodi-
I appreciate the thread, and I’m not trying to be aggressive, but my question is how you can post this and claim you’re not at least a teensy bit racist yourself. I mean, ask youself how you’d feel if someone said to you "leave it to black people to [do something negative]."

never said i wasn’t racist. don’t believe i proved i was. i’m just answering questions as honestly as i can. if the responses are racist, i apologize. i didn’t open this thread to intentionally hurt anyone.

Oh , please. Whenever people make comments like this, (what’s acting black/gay/blonde/whatever?) I think they must be deliberately obtuse or out of touch with reality or are trying to pretend they must somehow be more “noble” than the rest of us because they don’t notice such trivialities.
Stereotypes do exist, and some people conform to the stereotype. Why they do it is another topic but it does happen and obvious examples of it can be found in any sizable population. I can go to the midtown area and see lots of flaming queens or blacks who “act” black. If a black family lives in a mostly white neighborhood, that family probably won’t act very black. I’ve seen gays in similar situations do the same thing, yet put them back in their element and Rupaul is just an amateur compared to some of these folks.

Don’t mean to go off on a rant, so here’s my question to vivian. I believe the reason some black guys date white women is because they’re more exotic in the same vein that many caucasian american men desire asian women.
Given this, would you consider changing your position re:

?

I mean, white women don’t get pissed at the men who date asian women. And even if your reasoning regarding white women being “easy” was correct, that doesn’t support your “slap in the face” position either.

vivian,

I don’t know if you overlooked my question about the “wet dog smell” of white people or if you just thought I was being a smartass. Just to show that it was a serious question, I did a search and found this AP story http://www.yforum.com/wetdogsap.html about a book titled “Why Do White People Smell Like Wet Dogs When They Come Out Of The Rain? And Other Questions Worth A Smack On The Head From Mom.”

Sorry if my question gave any offense.

You know what…

It’s true. i do think that white people smell like dogs, balonga/baloney, raw meat. it sounds dumb, but it seems to be somewhat true. i guess it’s like when people say south-east asians always smell like curry.

you didn’t offend me. it takes alot to offend me, so don’t you worry. didn’t think you were being a smartass either.

well, the BLACK WOMAN is going home for the day…i’ll be back to answer your questions tomorrow!

I’ll be blaaaaaccckkkkk!!! hah ahhaa…hee…ahem…ummmm…not funny?!

  1. Have you ever been “profiled” by the police? How common is it really (eg. how many people do you know who have been profiled)? Do black men get profiled more than black women? Do you think economic environment has anything to do with it?

  2. “Black,” “African American,” “Afro-American,” “Negro,” : what’s your preference? Does it make a difference? (I’m pretty sure that “Negro” is right out, but you never can tell.)

  3. Are most of your friends black, or white, or do you just know a bunch of people?

  4. You’ve stated that you find Bill Cosby “buffoonish.” What about the Wayans Brothers? Chris Tucker? Etc.

  5. Which is better, “The Boondocks” or “Jump Start”?

  6. Where do you live, geographically? You don’t need to be real specific, but I’m interested in large city/small city/small town and which state you are in, for perspective for your answers.

Thank you for your time and for allowing me this forum. Thank you also for your quick responses to the questions so far. Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Board.

Cranky,
I’ve also read these studies, and they don’t reflect the reality that I’ve observed. I know that my female black female friends and I all have the same issues and hangups (with, on average, no noticeable difference in degreee) about weight and body size that my white female friends have.
I always wonder about those studies.

I am “white” but my father’s family is from Brazil, and my mom’s Portuguese. Knowing the history of where my family is from, I am probably part black from several generations back, but I look white to most strangers - I usually am asked if I am Italian, Jewish or something.

Anyway, I guess I should ask a question…how black do you have to be to be black? I mean I have heard in some places if you are like 1/64th black you can be considered black. People who were 1/8th black could be segregrated from whites before the 1960’s. Most people I know who are just 1/8th black look more Sicilian or Greek than “African-American” so I imagine you could look like Craig Kilborn and be 1/64th black.
If I was to show a paper saying my great great grandmother was a black woman (which is very possible -if there was paperwork from back then) - would I be accepted as black even if I look white?
I mean where can you draw the boundary? I mean Vanessa Williams looks white to me…maybe except for her figure…but she was the “First Black Miss America”.

Hey again Vivian!

I posted:

& you responded:

Hmm, that’s highly informative in its own right. I didn’t know if it would be a recurrent kind of situation like part of every black woman’s everyday life or just vague and hypothetical. Mind if I pursue it a bit further?

Let’s say, for instance, that you were having discussions at work about the risk of sexual harassment and sexual assault, and some white guys were saying women exaggerate about harmless teasing and point fingers to get even or to be a bitch, white women were arguing back that what men perceive as teasing is often invasive and that the shit women have to put up with when they accuse pretty much eliminates cavalier or frivolous accusations, and some black guys stated that they are seen as sexual predators and rapists-awaiting-the-opportunity when they aren’t doing anything but being black, plus white people use accusations of that type because they are hung up about the possibility of black men raping white women, and you’re watching this conversational volley take place…?

Do you think you’d tend to ‘side’ with any of the groups, or put forth a perspective that’s different from any of them, or what?

LOL!

Well, I think we now know the real reason vivian doesn’t date white guys.

Now that I think about it, that could explain why black women run away holding their nose when I hit on them.

I personally didn’t find that statement too amusing.

Vivian-I do understand what people mean by acting white and acting black-but I don’t like it. It’s a stereotype, and it’s stupid. People should act the way they WANT to, without being called a buffoon, or Amos and Andy, an Uncle Tom, a Wigger or whathaveyou.

This board is dedicated to fighting ignorance-stereotypes are ignorance.

Guin, and Biggirl, lighten up.

breaknrun is right.

I understand perfectly what vivian is saying, and I have seen and experienced it myself (White guy dating a black girl for 5+ years now).

In fact, I even noticed it further than that, To the point that I’ve found that they woman will “act” more the color of the man. No, this is not always the case, and yes, there are exceptions, but being in a Long-term (with a very high probability for marriage) interracial relationship has made me notice other people in the same boat. I pay them a lot of attention, and I concur with what she is saying.

Yes, this is just MO – not stating it as fact.

Here’s a thread from IMHO where some of the same stink popped up. (Ignore the bullshit racist tripe spewed from the “Skribbler” incaration of Mark Serlin and I think it was a decent discussion)

White Man/Black Woman vs Black Man/White Woman

VIVIAN –

I realize that, but the obvious follow-up question is: Do you think you are a racist? Because with all due respect, it sounds to me like you are.

I think it says a lot about how tolerant this Board is that you can post something like “I think white people smell like dogs or raw meat” and nobody smacks you into the middle of next week for it – though I do realize you are “just being honest” and were answering a direct question. I can guarantee that if anyone, under any circumstances, posted “black people smell like raw meat,” they would be immediately taken to task, and severely.

I have always taken these “ask the so-and-so” threads as being posted as sort of “I am representative of this class or characteristic, so ask me questions about it.” But if I can “just be honest” in turn – I am not going to consider you representative of the class of black women, because I would devoutly love to continue to believe that, as a class, they are not as racist as you appear to me to be.

I was going to leave this thread alone, but I can’t. Until vivian can come up with some concrete examples of how white and black people are supposed to act, then I’ll have to consider this thread: Ask the BLACK WOMAN!!! nothing is too ignorant…except the answers.
We need more black posters on the SDMB. Even those with chips on their shoulders. I hope your stay here is long, productive and educational.

[sup]White people smell like raw meat? OJ is financially backed by white people who let him off the hook? Black people act white or vice versa when they date each other? Never been in a political conversation with mixed company? What’s up with that?

Well, I know that I always wear my special Chanel Steak Tartar Perfume…imported from France.

Some other posters seem a bit upset by the above, but if white people and black people within a society tend to have different diets then it may well be true that they smell a little different from each other.

I have often heard before that Americans travelling in China or Japan find that the locals seem to think that they smell bad. I asked some Japanese friends about this once. I don’t recommend that anyone else try this, as the question clearly made my friends very uncomfortable. After a lot of “Where did you hear that? Who told you that?” they finally admitted that some Japanese people (but not them personally, of course) think Westerners smell like spoiled milk. They attributed this to the fact that Westerners consume a lot of dairy products, while the Japanese don’t eat much dairy at all.

I doubt the difference in smell is all that great, but it is apparently noticeable to some people at least. This grain of truth could easily develop into a stereotype that many people believe even if they cannot smell much of a difference themselves. I suspect that children may be more sensitive to both factors than adults – I seem to remember thinking as a child that people of different ethnic groups smelled different, but I don’t think I’ve noticed it as an adult.

Vivian- Why are black women so attracted to me? I’m a mid 30s white man, and before I was married, I dated several black women. They used to come up and introduce themselves to me! Now that I’m married, I still get flirtations from black women. Maybe it’s because I’m a big guy, at 6-2, 220 lbs.
Also, I like black women because they seem more down to earth and easier to talk to than women of other races.

Oh, and about smell. A lot of black women wear some kind of cocoa butter smelling lotion that just drives me crazy!
