Ask the Swedish chick

Sorry to disappoint you, but Juggler wasn’t flirting.

Thankyou omni-not. Been lurking here a long time and finally got the guts to register ;-).

The cliché image of Sweden is that we are all bores who wouldn’t speak to a stranger unless there was an emergency and I guess it has some truth but not to that extent. Just give us some time to get to know you and you will have a friend. I think foreigners and immigrants are very well treated in Sweden which immigrants also have exlaimed to me. Sweden is the scandinavian country that accepts highest number of refugees and immigrants and with such much land free, why not?

And I wasn’t flirting, just saying that the university I attend is much better than the one she does  (nyyah soda)

Thanks Soda!! I think I’ll make some tomorrow.

Soda said, “BTW, Swiss=from Switzerland.”

Yeah, and the next thing you will be telling me that the Swedish have some magical land all over there own. I bet it is called Swederland or something.

Two more questions.

Can gay people get married there? And, how are gay people treated in general?

Two ABBA clarifications:

Chess was an original effort by Bjorn, Benny &
Tim Rice (who did Joseph, Superstar, Evita,
Lion King & Aida). It has never had a successful
run, but attracted a cult following. I’ve only
tract down one song in Swedish (Peter Jobeck’s
Pity the Child). There are alos two songs in German,
three in Hungarian, and three in Japanese in my
collection.

Japan was the first country to recognize ABBA’s
talents. Their first single “My Kind of Girl”
from the soft porn movie Inga’s Theme sold
over 100,000 copies there. Later, when they
released their Spanish album only in Argentina,
the Japanese imported it, repackaged it, and it
sold over 100,000 copies, leading to its release
in Europe and the USA. I have a CD of it. Odd to
see a Swedish supergroup singing in Spanish with
a lyric booklet both in Spanish and Japanese!

Another question for ya…

What do you perceive are the major differences between the US and Sweden? In particular, I’m thinking mostly along the lines of my first question, in that I’d like to know what the differences are in what the governments provide in each country and which system you think works better… Also, what do you think are the major social differences? (That is, do people treat each other differently than in the US? What are the differences in standard of living? Any other thoughts you’d like to share along those lines…)

Grammatica contracta.
Dum och tjock
Hic, haec, hoc
Han sig genast lärde
Hynde sig en svarter rock
Kyronii öl förtarde.

Which just goes to show you what happens if you study at Uppsala instead of Lund. Best of luck in the future, Juggler.

PS: Mrs. O hates this song because I made up a song about my dog to this tune.

Juggler! How very nice to see a countryman around here! I must warn you though, it’s absolutely addictive. Do not try to pursue an academic career (or any career for that matter) while hanging out here. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Now that that is settled, let me just say that Uppsala has nothing to offer compared to Lund. Do you have a Karneval? Do you have something so splendid as the AF castle? Is there one single park in the same league as Lundagård? No. Didn’t think so. All differences aside, feel free to butt in and add a Swedish guy’s opinion. But don’t go starting Ask the Swedish Guy or I will have to haul your ass down to the Pit and flame you :D.

Oh stuyguy?

sunbear, you are hereby invited to a party with me and my kick-ass Swedish friends. Not a bore in sight. Let me know when you’ll be arriving.

Montford, are you maybe gathering enough information to teach a course or something? Swedish chick-stuff 101? Public transportation is, well, lets just say I ride my bike as often as I can. In order to be super-efficient, the buses tend to take all possible twists and turns before arriving at my final destination. I only ride the bus when it’s raining like hell, I have loads to carry or if I’m just plain tired. Summer is mostly okay. Temperatures in the 70s, maybe 80s, but this summer has been a major disappointment so far. We had really nice wheather in May, but now it’s rather depressing. Lund is not by the ocean, but it’s close to the beach, 15 miles or so and I do own a bikini. A yellow one.

Sqrl, gay couple can register their partnership, but they can’t have a formal church wedding. Some priests do bless the union, but the church does not openly approve. The partnership gives almost the same rights and responsibilities as a common law marriage, but there are still things to work out. If one of them has a biological child, even if the father is “unknown”, the spouse will not have the right to keep the child (so to speak) should the biological parent die. Gay couples are not allowed to adopt, and lesbians do not have the right to use donated sperm from a sperm bank to become pregnant. Instead, they go to Denmark, where it is allowed. But in all, I think Sweden is an open-minded and non-homophobic place. I have gay friends and they have never been judged because of their sexuality. The retiring president of the student union at my univerisity is gay, and he arranged the first ever gay and lesbian ball which was a blast. (Do you have anything like that in Uppsala, Juggler? No. Didn’t think so.)

Annie, like ABBA do you?

Olentzero, cut out the “to my knowledge” part why don’t you and make me look like a dumb-ass!
I honestly thought I was the only Swedish person around, and no offense, but your questions in Swedish are right along the lines of what most people learn first. Now I know better.

No, your reaction was completely justified. I was horsing around 'cos I was the first one to reply to your thread. I’m always glad for the opportunity to speak Swedish since it’s probably the most commonly spoken of the languages I consider a mother tongue besides English.

So allow me to apologize for being a skithuvud at the beginning. Are you ever on IRC?

Oh, by the way, when SqrlCub was asking about Swedish Fish, he was asking about those little, red, chewy licorice fish you can buy in any number of candy stores around here. Are they actually Swedish in origin? I like to think they are, especially because I love them, but I can handle the disappointment if it’s not true.

Omentzero: Oops, I better move soon. Actually I will probably study the last two semesters in Lund and Barcelona. Have you heard “Märk hur vår skugga”? I think it’s the most popular song by Bellman and it has been performed by alot of good artists. If you like Bellman I suggest you buy some cds by Fred Åkerström who had a great voice and recorded alot of Bellman songs.

Actually, Juggler, Mrs. O got me a three-CD set of the complete Sånger from Proprius as a gift for our marriage celebration in August. I don’t know if Mark hur vår skugga is in there or the Epistlar, but it has my two favorites: Movitz skulle bli student and Gubben Noack, which Mamma O tells me morfar used to sing when puttering around the house.

I’m also working on getting the complete series of Folk Music in Sweden from Caprice.

Gee, can you tell I’m a Swedophile or what? leer

Is Hüsker Du a Swedish phrase?
What does it mean?
Why is there a board game bearing that name?

Soda: Ooooh a karneval? Well, since it’s every fourth year I guess I can enjoy it without moving there. Seriously though I think Uppsala and Lund are about the same quality wise there are just some small differences. And most of my friends from Sweden study down there so I guess it’s alright.

Olentzero: Little red licorice fish? We have little black licorce fish but I don’t think it’s very swedish. Have you celebrated swedish midsommar? If you did a traditional midsommar in Sweden I think you would have a blast. With dancing around the maypole and lots of fiddlers and traditional swedish food and ofcourse alcohol.

Vafan skulle jag INTE vilja? Mrs. O and I both want to go to Sweden - me, primarily because I want to visit the town my ancestors came from (Ramnered in Bohuslän - here’s their soccer team), and Mrs. O because she wants to know if there are any more like me where I came from. I think being able to get in on the party for Midsommarsdag (and play the fiddle too!) would just add to the fun.

You know, I tried to stop that last reply before it was too late. Anyway, here’s their soccer team.

soda: Haha, no. I’m not going to teach a course. I’m just merely curious (if someone started an Ask the Afghanistani Chick thread, I’d be all over it, too).

Of course, this knowledge will of course be helpful when I meet a Swedish chick and try to impress her with my knowledge of her homeland. So, thanks!

S-O-D-A soda…
Sorry, um, Isn’t that chick band Drain STH from Sweden? If I am on the right track here, what does STH stand for?
