Asperger's and Emoticons

How comfortable are people with Asperger’s using smileys in tekst based communication?

Does it help them?

I haven’t been officially diagnosed with Asperger’s - nevertheless, I show a lot of the signs - and I understand emoticons perfectly, and indeed I use them frequently.

Outside smilies, I’ve seen a number of folks on the spectrum use certain typography to help convey messages better, for example the use of ~tildes~ to set off sarcastic material. As in “Yes, I’m ~so sure~ you just ~happened~ to be there.”

I believe that overuse / abuse of smilies indicates either Alzheimer’s Disease or utter, complete retardation. In my experience.

I know a guy who has asperger’s and in his texts he uses smiley’s a little too freely for my taste.

Don’t know what that means, and I wouldn’t necessarily put it down to his asperger’s, but I noticed this recently.
