I just got a card from an asset locator saying that I have an asset they will help me find. The card used a version of my name that makes me think there might really be something–it is the name my mother would have put on something, not the name I generally use legally.
So my question is, if it’s out there, how can I find it? If they found it, surely I can find it.
I know there has been a thread about this but I couldn’t find it (which makes me wonder if I ought just go ahead and let somebody who knows what they’re doing find my asset).
On the other hand, I don’t really expect it to be much.
Most states probably have something similar–so there will be a database you can search somewhere in the State government you can search. Check those databases for states you have a connection with.
A smart scammer goes to this extreme in order to win your confidence…
There is no copyright on the info, once he tells you what it is, don’t pay.
There is of course, the possibility you are going to be asked to pay $500 ,
and then be told… and then you are told its a block of pre-platt land… land with not even a proper road, eg swamp in Florida.
or no town water or other services, eg desert
Got a letter once regarding funds from the State of Illinois, from the state itself IIRC. I responded, was sent forms to fill out, duly filled them out and sent them in. Got more of the same forms back with request to fill them out, did so, sent them in. Got the same forms again with the same request…concluded they had no intention of remitting any funds to anyone. I suppose there is a legal requirement they contact people they owe money to but no requirement that they actually return the money at any point. It wasn’t a huge amount, something like less than a grand, but it became clear that I could fill out forms and return them until the cows came home and my only profit would be an improved ability to fill out forms.
