To clarify: what is more tolerable—someone who is deliberately obnoxious or someone who just doesn’t know better? I have met people who are both, and that is the worst.

Put me down on Team What-the-eff-is-this-guy-smoking. Your threads never make any sense to me. They often seem to be in the wrong forum. I think you create more threads than anyone else I’ve seen.

Choice between someone who is deliberately obnoxious, or someone who may have obnoxious habits, but isn’t capable of controlling them? Sheesh, show some human morals and human reason: obviously, the deliberate jerk is VASTLY worse than the innocent bloke with control issues. It’s a moral thing.
Neither the asshole/bitch nor the socially awkward cretin is going to admit to being an asshole, so how would you know which you were dealing with anyway?
Ok, now let me ask another question. What about in a work setting: would you rather partner with a competent jerk or a kind dummy? What about for a boss?
I’ve worked with an evil woman who was brilliant. She was a nightmare to interact with but I respected the hell out of her expertise. Likewise, I have worked with someone who was really slow and awkward and we were constantly trying to clean up his messes–but he was so kind it was hard to sustain frustration.
Again, I am being serious–it’s interesting to think about.

Idiots, OTOH, seem to rise or fall to their own level of ability/willingness to participate, and on the whole, I find them less irritating.
Given the above points, while I prefer to not deal with either of the two, the fact that I persist in turning to the SDMB as my internet milieu of choice suggests that, long term I’d rather inhabit the same virtual space as an idiot.

In all honesty? I was so concerned about getting scolded for using profanity and/or sounding “mean” in the other threads, I thought this was the only safe place to post without catching shit.
The last thing I posted here was criticized for not being pit-worthy. So I thought this was more in line with the status quo.
We can all see how that worked out.

I’d rather work with an idiot than a prick because at least the dummy isn’t being a dickhead on purpose. People being dickheads on purpose are assholes and I don’t put up with them. Idiots at least are sincere in their stupidness and they are not being irritating on purpose.

So anyway…what if the asshole was smart and organized and efficient? Like, you’d hate every minute of the project but you would know you’d excel in the end?
Don’t worry about profanity in the other forums. As long as you don’t use them against other posters or insult other posters then the other forums are fine.
Like in IMHO if someone asks, “What is your favorite Disney character?” you are absolutely able to say, " Fucking hell Goofy is the fucking bomb."
