Astrological Dopers. Read us!

Er…

  1. Sometimes; yes; depends on my mood; no

also -

  1. I don’t think so, but I’ve heard otherwise; beauty is in the eye of the beholder; I plead the 5th

  2. I don’t know about a cult, but I was a deacon/lay minister at a church I belonged to some years ago

  3. Well, lesse…I smoke (), but nothing else…

Nevetheless, I know this is all in good fun! Thanks!

Life On Wry…I’d say that’s pretty accurate…but the funniest thing is…I’m sitting here with my right middle and ring fingers buddy taped as my ring finger is

broken.

Sure, some of the generalities could be made to fit most anyone, but those specifics! Usually spot on. If not, then very close.

I would love to know how it’s done. I guess I could read a book or two about it.

Or is it a talent, like musical ability?

If you’re still at it…

I’m just reading books, NoClueBoy. Two of the best books I have on the subject are The New Astrology by Suzanne White, and The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elfers. Between what each book has to say about each subject, I’m compiling, summarizing and paraphrasing. If there’s talent on my part involved, it’s as an editor, not as an astrologer.

Is a lot of it self-fulfilling prophecy? Probably. As others have pointed it, it can be very vague and generalized - plus you’re dealing with people who want to hear about themselves. People are not black and white - there are very few people who are “always honest” - but tell someone he is honest, and certainly he’ll dredge his memories and find some instance where he was honest where others might not have been. Tell someone she has a sarcastic streak and she will think back to an instance when she was, indeed, sarcastic.

Most people have some overriding and easily recognizable personality trait. If the first word that comes to your mind about a friend is “stubborn” then that’s a good bet that he is more stubborn than most. As it happens, he’s also an Aries, which most astrologers concur is a stubborn sign. If he also happens to be born in the year of the Ox, then there’s further proof that Oxen are stubborn - and further evidence that your friend is a stubborn kind of guy. But - you already KNEW he was stubborn. So is it a fact that Aries/Oxen are stubborn, or while you were reading about Aries/Oxen was stubbornness what YOU noticed?

All of that said, I am intrigued by how often these books DO describe people I know very accurately - as I said earlier, the one glaring exception is my husband, who is never described, by any astrology book I’ve read, as anything even close to what he really is like. I am not a believer, but coincidence appeals to me - and I like to know that I am not alone in thinking (or hoping?) MAYBE there’s something to this after all.

Plus, it’s fun!

If you have a moment…

Goo, Monstre & XJETGIRLX - sure, but give me until tomorrow. I’m going to bed.

PS - I sincerely hope that everyone IS taking this in the spirit of fun and understands that I am NOT trying to mislead anyone or making any claims for astonishing abilities, knowledge, or accuracy.

Looks like fun! How about another one with your birthday?

While it’s true that I’m generally pleasant and easy to get-along with and somewhat comfort oriented, the sleep late and cushy pillows part is totally wrong. I am not at all a conquer the world type and I insist on doing my own accounting and taxes and such. I am generally tactful but not overly so. I rarely struggle at work. I am not at all the grand gesture type in love. I do have a fair amount of medical problems but not with my back unless you count a pinched nerve in my neck as a back problem. I have never had a cavity in my life, my teeth are in great shape. I am not the overbearing type. This one gets a 2 out of 10.

Problem solver and technical mind is dead on target. Handy with tools is fairly true. I am organized but not very tidy. I do take orders very well but it’s true that (in my opinion) most of the good ideas are mine. I generally don’t mind small talk or gossip and I am fairly patient. I almost never panic and handle stress very well. The love part is fairly true. The work part is wrong. I have always been an employee of a company and never in management. This one gets a 5 out of 10.

There is nothing true about me in this one except possibly the “looks boring” part. 0 out of 10.

I think it’s obvious from my contribution to this thread that the first sentence is not true at all. Believe it or not, I am very open minded and curious despite the fact that I am a skeptic. I don’t have a real big problem with criticism and I am not easily discouraged. I am not at all the type to try crazy new things, especially with sports. I am not accident prone. This one gets a 1 out of 10.

So, none of them described me very well. My true birthdate is the first one (12/23/63) which got a 2/10. The ones furthest from my birthdate were worse that my actual birthdate and the one closest to it.

 :stuck_out_tongue:

That was fun. Thank you.

I would encourage those of you impressed by the accuracy of your results to look and other people’s results and see if those would be accurate too. I don’t personally have a problem with people having fun with this but let’s be very clear, there is no scientific basis at all to astrology. None. Saying things like, “there just may be something to this” is very ignorant. Many double blind studies have been tried (see Cecil’s column that I cited earlier) and they have all failed to show any correlation. My mind is open enough to change if evidence to the contrary of my opinion is presented. So far, none exists.

One last thing. As a control, I had my wife review the four readings without seeing my comments and had her do the 0-10 rating. The results are interesting.

My ratings: 2, 5, 0, 1.
Her ratings: 3, 3, 6(!), 2.

She claims that I am a little moody, charming and goofy in love and suspicious of people at first. I don’t even know what to say about this but in the interest of fair play I had to report it.

Haj

Hey, this looks fun.

You should open your own 900 number

Rather than “ignorant,” I’d like to see that say “is optimistic, but unlikely.” I know the real meaning of the word ignorant, but it just sounds so dismissive and … well, mean.

About your mind being open - that’s nice, but this thread isn’t a debate, and at no point in time has anyone here said “Oh my gawd, it’s ABSOLUTELY TRUE and how can you not believe??” In fact, no one has presented any “evidence” here at all - people asked for readings and I did them. You challenged the accuracy, and it seems to me that you’ve proved that this is, indeed, a hit or miss deal. So - please let the ones who are enjoying this bit of fun continue to do so without having to be educated further.

And finally - I got an email from someone here I did a reading for. It was pretty accurate - accurate enough to convince ME that these books aren’t complete nonsense. If I’m an idiot for being convinced, I’m actually OK with that.

You’re not making fun of me, are you?

XJETGIRLX - 5/20/80:

Cheerful and optimistic, hardworking and expressive. Probably comes across as having an excess of nervous energy. Likely to be a traveler. Can be undisciplined, particularly in terms of career - maybe a job-hopper. No medical issues of note.

Monstre - 8/30/70:

Financial skill is the biggie here - this person will be unusually adept at handling money. May be overbearing and pushy to others who are not as organized or practical - no patience for things that are not goal-oriented. Healthwise, this person may be prone to excesses and should watch out for that.

Goo - 9/3/78:

Probably very good looking, and a little vain about it. Generally quiet and unassuming, still it is not a good idea to try to take advantage of this person - the fallout can be scary. Not quick to take offense, but slow to forgive once offense is taken. Gall bladder trouble is likely.

Crescent - 12/31/58:

Cautious and conservative, except perhaps in terms of dress, where this person may be a bit of a sparkler. A big reader, and a good cook. Very independent, and a fighter for the rights of others. Like all New Year’s babies, the knees are susceptible.

Daowajan - 3/21/83:

Very friendly, very work-oriented. Has a tendency to try to organize people. Probably very graceful, possibly even a dancer. This person is also probably very good with kids, because she understands them (and remembers very well what it was like to be a little kid.) Not a good idea to try to dominate this person - she does not like to feel confined. No weird medical stuff.

cadolphin - 7/16/57:

Romantic and flashy. Easily frustrated by routine. Fairly unconventional in thinking - and can be very vocal about it. There are a lot of ups and downs here, rarely are things on an even keel for long periods of time, because this person can’t stand it when things are boring. Nothing weird medically, except for maybe a stubborn insistence that they are are not sick, when in fact they are.

Oh… pity, not really. Yup, emotional and emphatic, but I don´t like meddling. (I once tried to fix up my sister with a guy she thought was cute when I was 17, and I learned my lesson :D)
I actually quite like sports, but I am a bit picky with my food (well, I´m vegetarian, for a start). And I sleep like a log.
But unusually good-looking - that´s me alright!

Maybe it´s the time zones…plus I don´t know my exact birth time…

Thanks anyway, this is fun!

I’ll bite.
