AT&T Broadband

Do they still suck? I just moved back into an area that is serviceable by their cable modems. I was on their service at the university, and although everything usually worked ok for the most part - their customer service was complete ass.

From school I moved into an apartment with no cable modems (or DSL) for a year. It sucked more than I can even describe. Oh, how excited I was when I found out that the house we were purchasing was in a cable modem area.

Well, we moved in this weekend, and I tried to sign up for the service. One problem - the previous owner hasn’t cancelled his account yet, and I can’t start mine until they cancel his. I either have to get him to cancel his service first, or I have to go to the local AT&T office with proof that I bought the house from this dude.

After I’m told the above on the phone by one of their reps, I ask where the local AT&T office is. She puts me on hold. After about 2 or 3 minutes she comes back, apologizing for the hold and asking me to hold on again, so she can transfer me to customer service (I guess she’s in sales). So she transfers me. It’s now been 25 minutes on hold for “customer service” with no end in sight. I just need a damn address!

Anyone else on AT&T Broadband in Texas? Having problems?

I was with AT&T atHome service. Now I’m with Insight atHome service. I don’t know who Insight is; they just showed up on my bill one day. And raised the rate slightly. I’m not in Texas, but my experience with atHome has not been bad.

I live in Plano and have AT&T internet access. No problems at all with their service. Pretty much everyone I know who has AT&T access doesn’t have any problems.

I’ve got AT&T in the Jacksonville FL area for TV, Cable Internet, and phone. They’ve been raising the rates steadily for a year. There have been numerous news stories locally about how bad their customer service is. I’m giving serious thought to changing to BellSouth DSL. Cable internet is great as long as no one else in the neighborhood is on line…

@Home sucks, and they’re on the verge of bankruptcy, but the alternatives are usually worse. A less scrupulous person than I might just take advantage of the live connection, fire up a DHCP connection and just use it until they figure out someone is supposed to be paying for it. But that would be wrong.

@Home blows. I used Road Runner while I lived in Austin, and was quite satisfied–steady as a rock, great tech support, only complaint was that they rape you in the ass with a $100 setup fee for a procedure a child can do.

Unfortunately, when I moved Dallas I was too far away for DSL, and the only cable modem provider was @Home. After missing their appointment by a week, they came, installed the modem, and left…and then the modem stopped working. Call them back, guy shows up four days later, boosts signal, leaves…and it STILL doesn’t work. One irritated phone call later yet another serviceman arrives, boosts the signal, and NOW it works correctly.

During the first month of use the cable would blink off at random intervals. Calls to tech support would reveal some server outage in area was down, and all they could offer was to wait out the spells. Gee, thanks for the help.

Lately they seemed to have pulled their heads out of their collective asses, and my service has only been lost for a few hours over the last month. Better, but still not as good as Road Runner.
