Atheist Churches, Good or Bad Idea.

I can’t even figure out what this thread is aboutnow but as to the point about religious people giving more money to churches and less to charity–it should be remembered that many (by no means all) donations to the church go toward charities carried out by the church.

I have lots of issues with the RC church (issues serious enough that I left last year), but however reactionary my then-fellow RCs had become, they were generous with their time and money and funded things like St. Vincent de Paul (which provided short-term help to the needy with food, housing and utilities that was not available from any other source), the local food pantry/soup kitchen/shelter, showers and diapers, etc. for needy mothers/families with babies & young kids, repairs for elderly and disabled people, diocesan residential and job assistance for the homeless, after-school and preschool for disadvantaged kids, schools and food programs in poor countries…the list actually goes on. A substantial portion of the weekly donation and the yearly donations to the diocese, plus many special collectionsmeant that “church” donations were also charitable int he sense of concrete assistance to poor people and people in trouble.

The Episcopalian church that I have joined is similar, and also intent on looking on donations as a way to fund charitable endeavors rather than a way to add to the church’s coffers. In fact, our rector just agreed to take a pay cut so more money can go to what Christians ought to be doing.

I’m not suggesting that giving to “secular” charities is any less worthy, obviously, but the money that goes into the collection basket at many churches does go in significant part to charity.

Oh, don’t worry, we’re not.

I’m curious what you think debating actually is. I’m by no means a debater, but I learned in high school that a proper debate includes things like taking a position and doing enough research to be able to defend that position logically and coherently. What you’re doing doesn’t seem like debating to me at all.

+1 to Huck.

is peppered with both secular and non-secular organizations.

Also, the BSA is a **very **christian-influenced group. =

You must have gone to one of those evil “Atheist” high schools.

No doubt. I even made a similar point earlier.

But a point also brought up earlier is that while those charities have religious backgrounds, they mostly don’t make it a point to overtly proselytize.

pchaos apparently doesn’t count an organization as “atheist-friendly” unless they’re actively spreading some kind of atheist message without requiring the same from Christian charities. The double standard was pointed out (repeatedly) to no effect.

Is that entirely his fault? Sounds like to me you don’t speak pchaos, and English is your only language. I don’t recommend trying to learn lekatt either.

Well, I guess if the little feller has really thrown in the towel this time, somebody needs to find a new mouse for the hungry cats to play with.

I enjoyed the show. Czarcasm retorts gave me the most smiles and laughs in this one, especially how he tried to narrow him down on his definitions. He really stayed with it, but there were plenty of others that kept it entertaining too. Thanks all.

No. You are not debating. You seem to be trolling, unless you are really as clueless as you have portrayed yourself.

I am closing this thread and I am putting pchaos on notice that he has really tripped my troll indicator. If I continue to see this sort of nonsense, I will begin handing out Warnings for trolling.
