Getting back to your question. It appears you can’t see the difference between some one who has been here since Moby Dick was a minnow, and a guy that was here for 2 days. Their attitudes and attachments for this place, if this is the case, then I think your clue meter needs some fresh batteries.
As I have said before (and several other in this thread) we need new posters, we should cut them a bit of slack and let them get used to this place. Instead some people just want to jump in the new guys shit.

I’ll say, too late to matter, that I found oldvet suspicious too. The whole ‘Attention-Whore’ meme for Guin is also getting really fucking old. She wasn’t thread-shitting, she was expressing doubt in the veracity of the OP’s story.
Again with the big mean Guin scaring off the poor newbie by “jumping his shit” and “attacking his honor.” Who knew that she had such power over this majestic and vital form of social interaction.
I’m all fine with the whole minds disagreeing, but statements such as yours stray pretty damn far from reasonable. What Guin said may have been rude or slightly harsh, but they certainly don’t constitute an attack on his honor.
I didn’t post a thread with a wild story in it in the Pit two days after my first post, and I suspect you didn’t, either. We do need new blood around here, but I don’t think we need to treat every new member with kid gloves. New members with a little sense won’t jump neck deep in the Pit right off the bat (I sure as hell didn’t). They’ll hang around and get a better feel for this place before wading into the free-for-all that the Pit (quite obviously) can be.
For the record, repeating what others have said, I also think Guin’s expression of disbelief was very mild for the wild world of the internet. If the Old Vet and other newbies can’t take even that much heat, this really isn’t the place for them.

Well, I hope he was telling the truth, but he did refer to himself three times in his first six posts as an ex-Seal. And claimed that in his account “every word is/was true,” including that he went on a solo salmon fishing trip “less than 14 hours after major reconstructive maxio-facial surgery,” and that in the course of landing a fish the line sawed through his hand until it hung up on bone, requiring 24 stitches. Meanwhile, when approached by a DNR agent, said agent apparently did not perform first aid for his post surgical bleeding or his butchered hand.
And then told an even bigger fish tale, about a hammerhead shark and a rubber dinghy.
Could be true, I suppose, but surely speculation to the contrary is not out of line.
oldvet did not leave because of Guin. He was mildly annoyed that she was skeptical but that was it. It wasn’t about Guin. The subsequent hijacks to pile-up on Guin were unnecessary. It wasn’t about her, it was never about her.
oldvet left because he was PM’d and emailed by someone (Not Guin) accusing him of lying and demanding he provide proof that he was indeed an ex-seal. On my board we would consider this harassment and the sender would be warned or banned depending on the number of offenses.
From the wording oldvet used I highly suspect it was the recently banned poster who posted a couple times and said things similar to what oldvet said was demanded of him.
oldvet doesn’t have to be thin-skinned to not want to stick around a place that he had only joined a couple days ago when he gets treated as mentioned in #2 above.
There is no burden of proof on oldvet, he isn’t asking us to send him money to pay for his surgery for injuries from war wounds, he isn’t trying to sell us property. invest in his pyramid scheme or run for governor. It doesn’t mean a lick of spit if he is what he says he is or not. Okay, sure Seals hate it when people who aren’t Seals claim to be Seals, but it seems more to apply to people in “real world” running around claiming to be Seals and trying to get something out of it, what the hell difference does it make on these boards? How can we be sure anyone is who they say they are on the internet? How many people have said that we all exaggerate stuff on the internet?

I don’t think oldvet is coming back. I think this whole thread is a moot point now. Maybe the mods will finally see fit to close it because it isn’t going anywhere but in circles.
I agree with those that say Guin was polite with her query. I don’t think it’s tone was out of line at all for what she’s meriting. Next, I also don’t feel she’s attention whoring in this thread, at all. She stated her concerns (again as I /we have said, nicely) and the rest of the time has been spent either explaining, defending or hoping to disentangle herself from the angle that’s being presented.
I know how many feel about her bandwagon jumping, but honestly, that isn’t this case now.
Well, since apparently the person who sent the harassing email is now banned (I have no idea who you are talking about, btw), isn’t it kind of pointless to tell people in this thread to stop sending harassing emails to new posters? Since none of the posters here are the ones who actually sent the harassing email?

FTR, justanoldvet did set off my Spidey sense about potentially making up stories, or at least “enhancing” them to be a lot more interesting than they were in reality, but I was perfectly willing to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Besides which, I was going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt; sure, taken as a whole, a lot of his experiences seem somewhat improbable, but lots of people have crazy stuff happen to them. Shrug.
I don’t know for sure the banned poster is the one who sent the email/PM’s, it was a suspicion. It could have been more than one person for all I know.
Anyway, there was a lot of time wasted in this thread going after the person who was not responsible. The nuance was that there was a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing in this thread.
Okay, look- Guinastasia did not become the subject of a would-be pile-on simply because she said one sentence. She is merely a symbol of the paranoia, distrust, and downright hatefulness towards both newbies and weirdos (AKA Dopers who are not just like the average Doper) that have seemed to gain such a presence here. It’s like we’re a dysfunctional, inbred, redneck family who runs out on the property with shotguns when an unfamiliar car drives up. It’s kind of crazy, actually, when you consider that even if old dude was embellishing some facts or even making it totally up, it didn’t hurt anyone. Why does anyone have to come in and say, “Oh, hey, by the way, I think you’re a liar” with no proof, nothing except their “gut feeling”? That’s bullshit- if you’re going to call someone out for lying, at least have something to back it up.
And Guin’s our dog, who we like to kick around every now and then, either for fun or because we’ve had a bad day.
